We never used to call a hamburger a sandwich - we just used to call them hamburgers - but outlets like McDonald's have been (figuratively) forcing their terminology down our throats while we (literally) have been forcing down their products, so now the use of 'sandwich' to describe a hamburger has gained a grudging acceptance here.
When Subway and similar first began selling here, we used to call them 'subs' but I suppose 'roll' is still the main term used for the smaller ones, and sometimes the bigger ones are called baguettes. Personally, I object to calling such things sandwiches, but I suppose the youth of our once great country have probably become brainwashed into calling them sandwiches now.

I don't know if youths do refer to subs as sandwiches - I was just going on the assertions of other posters. I looked on the UK SUBWAY website and it looks like SUBWAY themselves don't use the word 'sandwich' to describe their products so perhaps there's still hope...

Subway doesn't call its products sandwiches.
Kraft doesn't call its products cheese.
KFC doesn't call its products chicken...

Hormel does refer to whatever that goo is in a can as "Potted Meat Product".

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
I live in a community where most of the people are descended from Danish immigrants. One of mainstays of the lunches served following a funeral is open-faced danish sandwiches. I am always annoyed that they call those things sandwiches. It is like they don't even understand that 'sandwich' is both a noun and a verb. Calling a 1/2 slice of buttered bread with a slice of meat or cheese stuck on it a sandwich does violence to the meaning of the verb 'to sandwich'. You would think that could at least call them by their proper Danish name, "smørrebrød". But no, they insist on calling them sandwiches. As a rule I slap two of those travesties together and make an actual sandwich out of the damned things. You know, two pieces of bread with meat and/or cheese in the middle.
Don't even get me started on the butter business. I like bread and butter just fine, but bread and butter and meat/cheese/egg salad just does not taste right to me.
One other thing, and I think people must be doing this to intentionally annoy me, they often put the meat on slices of bread that have been cut diagonally and the cheese on slices that have been cut square so that when I put the two together they don't even fit properly. Or, they put the meat on a 1/2 slice of regular sized bread and the cheese on a 1/2 slice of danish rye which, even before it is cut in half, is alread only half the size of a regular slice of bread. Same problem, the two just don't fit together properly.
So, you guys can go ahead with your silly little debate about the status of hot dogs, I am with dealing something really serious here.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
I say hotdogs are sandwiches. The base reasoning is that 'rolls' are a subset of sandwiches and a hotdog is accepted as a roll. If we want to get even more word screwy, everyone accepts that a hotdog goes into a bun, and hamburger sandwiches have buns and yet are still sandwiches.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
In Scandinavia, they also do this thing, where they bore a hole in the bread and insert the hot dog in that way. Often they will squirt some condiments in there before putting the sausage in.
Does this count as a sandwich?
They refer to this as a "French" hot dog.
It also only increases the penile appearance of the food, I have to say.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
Yes.
Using my previous completely iron logic, if tostino pizza rolls are rolls, then the only difference between where you put your hotdog and pizza filling is the hot dog variant is round. The dog is sandwiched between bread
Which brings up the question, if the bread is later fused back together is it no longer a sandwich?

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
That's a good question!
I have one of those Breville sandwich toasters.
For most sandwiches it's useless, but it does make nice melted cheese with baked beans toasties. These are great providing you're patient enough to let them cool for about half an hour before trying to eat them - otherwise they burn all the skin off the roof of your mouth. I must admit that I use it very rarely though - there's too much hassle setting it up and cleaning it afterwards to make just one meal.
Anyway, I call the things that it makes (where the bread is fused around the edges), 'toasties'. I think Breville were clever in naming the thing a 'sandwich toaster' rather than a 'toasted sandwich maker' - we can all agree that what goes into the thing are sandwiches, but 'sandwich toaster' avoids the controversy about whether or not sandwiches emerge after the cooking process.

I have no strident opinion on whether or not a hot dog is or is not a samwich.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
Aha! So if an open-faced sandwich is a sandwich... then items which in fact have only one piece of bread can be sandwiches, and excluding the hotdog based on this is arbitrary!
More people would realize this, but Big Farinaceous owns all the bread scientists and they keep it quiet.

I didn't have a strident opinion before this thread. Now I am enraged and want to fight everyone who is wrong.
You are letting your emotions cloud your judgment. The fact that you are uncomfortable with the fact that a hot dog on a bun is a sandwich doesn't make it untrue.
