I have no idea what you mean. Lesbian crafting = freethinking? Anyway, people have been forming and joining private social groups since the beginning of time. Not my cup of tea but to each their own. I am sympathetic to the view that "freethinking" is not advanced (and might be eroded) by the dynamics of a private social group, but unless the stated intent of a particular private social group is to support or advance freethinking that would seem to be a moot point.

I don't think deleting comments and banning people from groups is congruent with our general policy of moderation. Public group comments are not so different from thread posts, and enabling exclusionary, heavily moderated groups on a site that on principle eschews that sort of moderation doesn't seem right.

Social groups seem to be visible to FF members who aren't part of the group. That makes them kinda different from PMs.

I'd prefer FF to not have any exclusive, moderated places. One of things I've always liked about FF is that it doesn't have that kind of stuff. Sure, they're essentially being used for fluff, but there's nothing about them which prevents other uses. I guess the fact that, unlike other boards, any social group exclusivity or moderation doesn't have the official support of the admins might temper my objection a little.

By the way, who knew that democracy guy was using social groups to run an odd little series of workshops on forum usage by and for himself?

I would like to announce that I had no idea that there were social groups at FF, and still have no idea how to see them or participate in them.

Yeah that. Okay, we're going to go ahead and remove the moderation tools for group starters. There's no real advantage to it and it doesn't jibe with our ethos.

Anyone can still start or join a public group, and post messages on the group profile.
