Actually, I have a hate-on for most punk too. :shiftier: With me it had a lot to do with timing. I've made my peace with rap, skiffle, rockabilly, and p. much every form of music that formerly set my teeth on edge, but punk just hit me way, waaay wrong, and I never learned to forgive.

It's all I can do not to make a big ol' punk video post just for sack. I'm gonna find obnoxious anarcho punk songs!

Instead have the Toy Dolls doing Nellie the Elephant.

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And trundled back to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie is the hero we need.

Ever had one of those days?

So, I walked into my General Biology class, all set to give a lecture on Organic Chemistry, and found my Zoology students staring back at me.

There was an understandable moment of confusion while I thought: "Wait, what are my Zoology students doing here? Zoology meets on Mon-- ohhhh."

Fortunately, I'm a professional, so I immediately shifted gears and gave my lecture on Animal Architecture instead of my lecture on Organic Chemistry. After all, I'm sure the Zoology students would have thought it strange if I'd started talking about Organic Chemistry.

[I wonder how long it would have taken before one of them finally worked up the gumption to ask what was going on.]

With all the snow days canceling school, I walked into the wrong clinic ready to supervise my Tuesday shift on a Wednesday. What really threw me off was one of the students is the same on the Tuesday shift.

I was looking over my (non microscope) photographs for the last year, and I'm mostly disappointed. Most of my unhappiness is coming from the lack of decent light indoors.

So, I bought a flash.

...and we're planning a vacation in the spring, and my kit lens' autofocus drive is broken, so I bought a new lens.

The lens I bought is a Sigma 18-250mm macro OS. I'm planning on taking this lens and maybe 1 more on the trip.

This weekend, I decided to experiment with the "macro" designation. So I 3D printed a "sweep stand", put a white piece of paper in it, and looked about for something to take a picture of...

Twice in the past week, I have thought I saw someone walking past the window in our enclosed back yard.

I've lived here since about 2000, and have never seen (or thought I saw) that before a few days ago. Flossy also saw it the first time, but I blew that off as maybe a raccoon or something. Today, I saw it much more clearly, though, and it didn't look anything like a raccoon. Human size, humanlike gait. But also, we have a six foot privacy fence completely enclosing the yard, and there's only one entrance, which is actually double gated and is also in the opposite direction that the whatever was heading. If someone did actually try to leave that way, they'd have to jump the fence or something.

So basically, I just assume we have draculas. And you know what they say about them: If you see one, there are probably twenty others you don't.

A while ago, the good lens on our SLR at work broke. It was one of those "do everything" zoom lenses, and the autofocus started chattering and seizing... We all wear glasses, so the quality of our manual focusing is inevitably bad. The spare lens is an outdoor lens with high zoom that focuses at minimum eight freaking feet away. For a long time now all our best photos have been done with phones...

Today we have a new lens, similar to the old but less broken. It came with add-ons and filters standard. It zooms farther while still focusing quite close.

If you screw on the included macro lens, that's very, very close indeed.

I am officially mad at the Criterion Collection. I registered for updates as soon as I heard about their streaming service, signed up as a beta tester, and dutifully tested everything I was able to, despite the fact that they hadn't rolled out any reasonable streaming options that I could use. It doesn't stream on Linux or the Roku, so the only way I could watch anything was to stream it to my tablet and then cast it to the TV. Sucks, but I did it. Then, I got my stupid couple weeks free in exchange for that, but it was still unusable because they had some exclusivity agreement with Apple or Amazon or something I forget. And here it is February and they're rolling out the creepy corporate apps, but there's still nothing I can use. They pulled all their stuff off Hulu a month ago, and it's pretty slim pickings across the other services.

So anyway, I just signed up for a free trial on Fandor.

I should probably have put this in that major life events thread.

"It wouldn't be cool anymore" implies that it was cool at one time. That, right there, is where you commit a fundamental error.

Jazz is cool.
Punk is junk.
Funk is funky.
Rock rocks.

It is important to get these distinctions correct.
