Thom Yorke had told Rolling Stone that BDS activism does “not encourag[e] dialogue”. But Seamus O’Brolchain of Radiohead Fans for Palestine replied in an open letter to Yorke, “We sent you letters in the post, we politely tried to hand them to a band member at a public event, we called your agents and your publicists, and you ignored us. Not even an acknowledgement, nothing at all. We tried to open a dialogue and it was you who refused.”
Also responding in a statement, Artists for Palestine UK said: “Palestinians who read Yorke’s comments will wonder if he knows anything at all about their dispossession and forced exile, and what it’s like to live under military occupation. He doesn’t mention the Palestinians other than to say guitarist Jonny Greenwood has ‘Palestinian friends’. A lot of us do, Thom. That doesn’t mean we think it’s okay to play a 40,000-strong stadium built on the ruins of a Palestinian village.”

Re: News Miscellany
Might as well put it here:
How alt-right leaders Jack Donovan and James O’Meara attract gay men to the movement.
Quote:
Donovan tries to sugarcoat his own racist beliefs when speaking to his main fan base, gay men who like his macho looks and straight men from the "pickup artist" culture and the manosphere who are desperately trying to learn from him how to be manly. Instead, reverting to the other half of the Nazi playbook, he prefers to highlight his hatred for "effeminacy," feminism, and "weakness." A beautifully muscular man of 42 who has perfected a masculine scowl in the many photographs of himself he releases on his website and Facebook page, he functions as beefcake for the neofascist cause. He’s parlayed his butch allure into a brand, earning money from a line of T-shirts and wrist guards that say things like BARBARIAN and a series of books that seek to instruct both straight and gay men in how to become more masculine and in particular, more "violent."
|
Quote:
At the National Policy Institute’s 2015 conference, alt-right star Richard Spencer’s annual Nazi-fest, a speaker named Jack Donovan exhorted the crowd "to leave the world the way you entered it, kicking and screaming and covered in somebody else’s blood." The same year, in the pages of the The Occidental Observer, one of the most prominent white nationalist webzines, another alt-righter, James J. O’Meara, held forth about how "behind the Negro, hidden away, as always, is the darker, more sinister figure of the Judeo. The Negro is the shock troop. The Jew is the ultimate beneficiary.” Aside from being open fascists and “white racialists,” Donovan and O’Meara have another thing in common: They’re both out gay men.
In his book The Homo and the Negro, O’Meara says that gay white men represent the best of what Western culture has to offer because of their "intelligence" and "beauty," and that "Negroes" represent the worst, being incapable of "achievement." Donovan calls women "whores" and "bitches," and, when a questioner on Reddit asked him his views of the Holocaust, responded, "What is this Holocaust thing? I’m drawing a blank."
Both have become influential figures in the alt-right; horribly, they are not the only gay men to respond to an olive branch lately offered by white nationalism. The opening of this movement to cisgender gay men is a radical change, "one of the biggest changes I’ve seen on the right in 40 years," says Chip Berlet, co-author of Right-Wing Populism in America. In the United States, unlike in Europe, out gay men have never been welcome in white supremacist groups. The Klan and neo-Nazi groups, the main previous incarnations of white hate in this country, were and still are violently anti-queer. And while a subset of openly gay men has always been conservative (or, as in all populations, casually racist), they never sought to join the racist right.

This is not surprising, chunks of the white gay male community have a serious issue with misogyny, victim blaming, racism and basically all the other things you see from shitty white men. Only ramped up a few notches because of machoism and hierarchy.
I do wonder if women who go to gay bars to 'keep from being hit on' know there's a good chance guys are still talking shit about them, they just don't want to date them.

What have we learnt about taking polls seriously, Watser?? Nothing is certain.
It is a delicious (and worrisome) prospect, however.

Apparently, it's not in Saudi culture to do things like observing a minute's silence. Nor avoiding things that might remind people of phrases like "state-sponsored terrorism."

Saudi football chiefs have apologised after their national team elected not to take part in a minute's silence for victims of the London Bridge attack.
Australian players linked arms as a sign of respect before Thursday's World Cup qualifying match at Adelaide Oval.
Saudi players took up field positions.
One Australian MP called it "disgraceful". Football officials said they had been briefed in advance that the "tradition was not in keeping with Saudi culture".

Syrian army reaches Iraqi border and cuts off tame US rebels from ISIS and the Deir ez-Zor oilfields, despite 3 US airstrikes.
Syrian Army, Hezbollah reaches border with Iraq for the first time in years
Quote:
Effectively, the SAA is now able to reopen trade between Damascus and Baghdad. Government forces have not controlled any parts of the largely ISIS-controlled border with Iraq since 2014.
In addition, Hezbollah is now able to be supplied with weapons from Tehran via an all-important land route. Previously, the Lebanese group relied on complicated airlifts for new armaments.

Re: News Miscellany
Quote:
In addition to the airstrikes, Raqqa was subjected to artillery and missile attacks, according to the activist collective known as Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently. It said the coalition used white phosphorous in the attacks.
In a video posted on its Aamaq news agency, IS also alleged the coalition used white phosphorous over Raqqa on Thursday at dusk, when Muslims would have been breaking their Ramadan fasts.
White phosphorous burns at extremely high temperatures and can be used to illuminate conflict zones or obscure them with smoke. International law prohibits its use in civilian areas because of its indiscriminate effects, from starting fires to causing excruciating burns for bystanders, according to Human Rights Watch, which said it was investigating the allegations.

Yea, culture has nothing to do with it, its western racism that makes the terrorists who they are...

Not that weird, they are closer than people think. Especially on Iran, which thwarts Saudi's Saudification of Syria and Yemen and supports Hamas and Hezbollah. Of course they can't cooperate too openly because the Saudi population do NOT support Israel and it could be used against them in the propaganda war by Iran (or even by Qatar/Turkey as things stand now).
