I've lived in a lot of places and I've never heard of that thing. Is it a new requirement or something? And if you're spending that much and only getting 8 to 10 years that's a shit deal anyway. (No pun, I promise.)

The only thing "below" is water. The pump grinder is actually underwater at times, like when we get 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. We cannot have gravity fed lines here n the wetlands.

I had a sump pump that would burn out because it always ran. Until I added a check valve in the discharge to keep the hose from draining back into the sump pit. Then it ran 1/3 of the time it did before.

ASCII Engineering Diagrams

without valve

with valve

|--------------> Water to yard/Poo to sewer

[] Pump

A swing check valve opens when the pump starts and the flow pushes it open, then closes when the pump stops and flow pushes back on it.

This would only be used if you have a big elevation change to the sewer or a long line that slowly drains back.

That'll be $300.

Not a plumber, the sewer company. The pumps must be provided by, serviced by, and installed by the company that provides the service. They have a total monopoly on all aspects of shit disposal, once the shit actually leaves the house perimeter.

Grinder pumps are typically used on household aerobic waste water systems, to facilitate more rapid fermentation of the waste material. Aerobic systems are used where the soil doesn't percolate fast enough to allow for a conventional septic tank and lateral system or doesn't percolate at all, such as in or near wetlands. The effluent of aerobic systems is of a higher quality than anaerobic systems, and is often sterilized by chlorine or some other disinfectant before being sprayed on grass or flowed into a pond. If a leach field lateral systems is used instead, it can be much smaller than on the traditional anaerobic septic tank systems.

My parents live out in the rural area and dump their left over poo juice out of a pipe a 100 yards from their septic tank. From there the green, green grass grows for a hundred extra yards down the waterway.

It's like a first world version of an outhouse.

There is an outhouse hole covered up on the property somewhere as indoor plumbin' was something of a new fangled thing installed when they built the new house in the 40s.

They took down the windmill that pumped water and installed an electric pump at the same time.

You people make me very grateful I'm near the top of a hill. All I need to worry about most days are roots and my excess of hair messing up the tub drain.

My kid's have long blond hair and every so often I have to pull a rat sized hairball out of the shower drain when they start complaining.

I went and bought a special tool because I thought I needed it, but I've only used that to unplug the peels from 10 lbs of potatos and 2 lbs of carrots stuffed down the garbage disposal one Thanksgiving. My holidays typically suck but this one was more sucky than normal as I almost got to the end of the snake before I hit the clog. I thought for sure double time plumber cost.

I found an old coat hanger with a slight bend at the end down the drain is more effective for hairball removal. I use the old pasty conditioner and tangled hair to my advantage.

I have ridiculously thick hair. I have to cut it off my vacuum brushes regularly because it just wraps around it. For the past nine years a combination of removing the screen over the drain to pull out all the hair I can get to with tweezers and plunging has kept it working fine. So I guess actually having to call a plumber for it once in a decade isn't bad. Still, couldn't it have been two weeks ago when I had the paycheck with almost no bills due instead of this week when all my utilities hit?

I was thinking about getting a PS3 for myself and my son for our nearby birthdays, but I have to rethink this because I just had to spend money on a plumber. (We had a leaky pipe in the wall.)

You know, I just got an email asking me to verify my Playstation Network account, which is really odd, because my name is not Tony, my password would not contain they word "GAY" and I didn't sign up for a PSN account.

The sad part is that it seems to be legitimately coming from Sony. Either somebody linked here, or I have really weird kismet.

I'm watching you, :ff: :susp2:

Just today, I decided that this is the last time I tell Microsoft and Twitter that the tween boyband fan who is repeatedly reentering my email address into her contact forms is not me.

Next time, I'm going to be mean.

Poor me, having an early adopter email address that other people want so bad they think it's theirs.

I got a new computer from work, and they sent a desktop rather than the laptop I asked for...but hey I am not paying for it so I can deal with that. However no wireless card ? Are you kidding me? I don't even have the ability to hook a wire into the internet delivery portal...because I didn't know I was a goddam refugee now!

My 6 year old HP desktop came with a WiFi card installed, as well as an external remote antenna. And it wasn't even anywhere near a top-of-the-line model.
