Question Recommended web hosting?

I'm looking to have a spot on the web to host some javascript stuff I am working on. I would want a domain name and database hosting as well as at least an option.

There are a lot different offerings out there. I was considering SquareSpace just because they are the ones I have heard of (yay marketing). At $12 a month they may be a bit on the spendy side, and may have a lot of things that I don't necessarily need.

Anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone here have someone they use?

I've been using Tigertech since about 2000. The few times I've had to ask for some support they were prompt and competent.

I mainly use it for email server but have fiddled with various web stuff to learn on and I see they offer a variety of database hosting stuff.

My highly biased but not necessarily bad advice is to avoid the companies that do too much marketing. At least exclude "I have heard of them" from your decision process.

What matters is (a) competitively priced offerings of the features you actually need, without paying for the ones you don't (shopping carts, 500 blogging packages preinstalled) - which is pretty easy to assess - and (b) quality support when you need it - which is hard to assess (reviews are often influenced by marketing).

Watch out for traffic limits. They probably won't bite ... unless you decide to expose one of your scripts to :ff: in which case :spend:

They often price by number of databases, like none in a basic offering, then 1. One is probably fine. But you've probably looked at this already.

You'll want to use a US-hosted and supported service therefore I have no actual specific suggestions.

I've used Streamline for several years now and they've been okay and not too costly. But like Joe says you'll want a USA based company so my recommendation is useless for you. I agree with Joe. Don't pay for more than you need - it's not that difficult or costly to switch to a different hosting company if your first choice doesn't work out - once you have your domain name you can take that with you.

Good point, be prepared to move.

In fact, don't assume you have to get your domain name service from the same provider as your hosting. Mine aren't ... or weren't, until one bought out the other.

Shell access. Do they have it? That's make-or-break for me. That's an essential feature most services try and sell as an upgrade. Part of the reason I mostly do my own hosting these days.

True, and it's a pain.

You run your own data centre and tier 3 or better internet connection?

Virtual server. They can't leave shell access out of those.
