It is the misspelling that put me off.
If they can't be bothered to spell the SINGLE MOST COMMON MESSAGE IN THE ENTIRE GAME correctly, what reason could I have to imagine that any of the rest of it will have been done remotely competently?
The New World Computing people rocked. They loved their games, they cared about them... The Ubisoft people who bought the wreckage really don't give a fuck.
4 had some nice stuff. The separation between heroes and their armies actually made for some cool strategy, for instance. And I did quite like the higher-res display options. On the other hand, 3 had some stuff I quite liked, like the cumulative effects of markets and thieves' guilds. (I also don't remember whether 4 kept the thing where town growth of a creature was boosted by creature dwellings you had flagged.)
On the other hand... 3 plays beautifully even on a netbook, although to run it under WINE, I have to have the X server in 16-bit mode.

Yeah, NWC was great, they will be missed. Now I have to go play through M&M VI and VII for old time's sake.

Oh hell, you guys went and did it now. I'm going to have to break out Heroes 3 again. Or maybe even the older ones - I loved 1 and 2 as well, even though 3 was better in terms of unit balance and mechanics.
Oddly enough, the Heroes games were my introduction to the franchise. A friend got me playing Heroes 1 not long after it came out, and I got 2 and 3 immediately when I heard "OOOO THERE'S A NEW ONE OUT!"
I never got any more after 3, because I was told quite emphatically to avoid them like the plague.
...the actual M&M games, however, I never could get into. I tried 4 and 6 (found both in bargain bins, although not at the same time.) and neither really did it for me.

I really enjoyed Heroes 4, although I think 3 was better balanced. 4 had some nice UI improvements but the game wasn't really better.
I played the original Might & Magic on a Mac back when it first came out for Mac. I lent my notes to someone who never returned them, though.

I am still loving Mass Effect 2. I wouldn't say that it's solely because it's how I got to hear Tricia Helfer (aka Number 6) make a Uranus joke, but it didn't hurt.

It was revisit-old-games-week for me and I found out Diablo II has major issues running on Windows 7. I tried every compatibility mode and fix idea I could find, the damn thing just won't run for me. I'm just going to have to hook up my old computer tomorrow, or work some way to install a dual OS on this one so I can choose which to boot from at startup. That'd be pretty convenient, actually, what with all the old games I have.

Well, I downloaded the player, but my old computer which ran XP came pre-installed and I never bothered creating a backup disk, so I don't have any disks to install an OS from. Also, Microsoft says I can't download XP Mode from them because I have the Home edition of Windows 7, not the Professional...
I'll keep poking around a bit, though.

Oh, sorry, I missed your question, Kael. Yes, that's the VM software I use and, unless they've changed something recently, yes, it's free forever.
I know I'm turning this into a "Video Games - Watcha Gonna Be Playin' in the Future?" thread, but there's a new trailer out for the upcoming Transformers game, and this one has actual gameplay footage in it instead of just cutscenes.

I just started playing TF2 on the PC with a few friends. It's pretty ridiculously fun to run around the map, stabbing motherfuckers in the back.
