Yay for HorseGirl!
Congrats to Goliath! And while I didn't give them any money, I did provide them with some strudel and coffee.

I hope you get the job, Goliath. Where would you be moving to?
Excellent job, Horse Girl.
No real news on the nephew, just a little more info on the injuries. A collapsed lung, blood clot on the brain removed via craineotomy. He's heavily sedated to keep stress level low while it heals some. At this point he is paralyzed on one side and they don't know if it is permanent. As soon as he's stable, they'll be flying him to the US for care.

Re: Member News Discussion
we got some promising news today on our nephew. His mom wrote:
Quote:
condition has been downgraded to NSI=Not seriously Injured. The attendant was not able to give me any info about his.... <specific injuries>
|
He's still in Germany but will be flown home soon, where they'll find out more. He's not going to die.

Re: Member News Discussion
It's just a brain injury, I'm sure, which the government doesn't acknowledge as an actual injury.

You know, I think you are right, Dingfod. I just got off the phone with his mom and without going into detail here, from what she's told me, it sure sounds serious to me.

Re: Member News Discussion
My father survived a TBI. It can mess up a person, who otherwise appears quite normal. Which makes it hard for some people to realize there is an injury! I hope he gets good treatment and rehab.
My father was in the hospital for 3 months recovering, and spent another 4 months with a night nurse and day care before succeeding in getting much of his skills back. And no, even 12 years later, he's not fully recovered.

Wow, Chris, I'm sorry to hear about that.
I'm afraid this is going to be a long, hard road for him.

Re: Member News Discussion
Freemonkey, you might suggest to his caregivers that they see about joining a support group for caregivers and survivors. It really helped us out to go to one for several years, to learn how to cope, what to expect, and learn strategies for getting along in the aftermath of a TBI.
Here
I know of a woman from our support group who was in a car accident and in a wheelchair for twenty years after. And she did finally walk again! So please don't ever think that recovery stops, the brain can heal and can reform neural pathways.

I discovered as a teen that it isn't a good idea to have a steak sandwich the day as wisdom teeth are extracted, no matter how much the pain killers seem to be working.

My dad told me to go get a nice large thin crust cheese pizza, since that is what he had after he got his wisdom teeth out. I told him I'd pass. Same for steak sandwiches. I think I'm having cheesy grits for dinner tonight. Yum!
