Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I proofed 300 pages in Project Gutenberg, which grants me access to doing round 2 proofreading.
Interestingly enough, I did 2 more pages in round 1, the jump from 301->302 in rank was 91 people. My spotty recollection suggests the average jump between page ranks from page counts 100-300 was about 20 people. That suggests many people slow down proofing in round 1 once they hit round 2. Not surprising, I suppose, especially because the project encourages you to work in the round with the most need, and the later rounds usually have more need for work.

So, what is the correct pronunciation of OS X? (I normally say, "OH ESS TEN", but you've got me wondering.)

Oh, it's definitely Osten, sounds like Austin.
(I had been pronouncing it oh-es-ex in my head, but didn't ever really need to talk about it IRL)

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
Oh ess ten is correct, according to what Apple computers say when you ask them to pronounce it. Don't have the link anymore because it was days ago when my coworker IMed it to me.
For the record, snotty computer nerds correction of my pronunciation came after he told me, "There's more than one computer language," while we were standing in front of the programming books. I replied, "I know. I buy these." Still, I'm sure I was an insufferable teen in my time.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I finished my taxes! Like, a whole TWO DAYS early! Not that I actually filed them myself. Gave my CPA fits, too, 'cause it turns out we owe the Fed and thus needed to get this shit done today or face late penalties (somewhat lesser-known fact: If you DON'T owe, there are no penalties for filing past April 15; you don't even need to apply for an extension -- Uncle Sam is happy to hold onto your money as long as you'll let him). Luckily, the State owes us more, so we still come out a few bucks ahead. Just not nearly as much as I had expected. Stupid taxes.
Anyway, this was the first time I've ever cut it so idiotically close. Although procrastination was part of it, the other part was Mrs. Puppet being so insanely busy with hearings and settlement negotiations and fla-ven that she had no time to gather up the info I needed to finish it up. Barely knocked this thing over the end zone right before the final gun.
You know I'm at diminished capacity when I use a football metaphor.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I taught myself JavaScript in about 5 minutes earlier this week. Yes, that means I am once again building web pages (new and improved! now with 100% more client-side bullshit!), but it turns out I don't hate the work nearly as much now that I am overpaid for doing it. Imagine that!
Plus it is wicked easy and that makes me feel smrt. Smrt like Velma.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
My mom actually owns this. I gave it to my brother to be evil, but she liked it and asked him for it. Now I have to hear the damn thing every year. I do not approve of having my evil backfire.

Is a picture of evaporated whiskey like a picture of a polar bear in a snowstom, or of cows eating grass, once all the grass is gone?

The point being that this is my age cohort, see.
Today, I had a conversation with a gentleman in which we sadly lamented the state of the youth of today and their dependence on consumer services such as the "cloud" and the graphical user interfaces. We shared stories of sending free SMS messages before the cell phone providers metered non-voice traffic. We cruelly mocked hapless youths who cannot navigate the world without GPS.
The gentleman I spoke to is 27 years old.

I made shakshouka today without suffering a serious burn injury from grabbing the handle on the pan while it was still hot.
All I did was lose my grip on the pan and spill tomato sauce and baked egg down into the space between the stove and the cupboards.

I have been at my jerb exactly one year to date. It probably would have gone by without my noticing except I had about 3 emails to that effect when I got in this morning.
