That poor defensless drone, they should be ashamed of themselves and get back to exterminating those nasty, viscious pigeons.

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
Is it wrong of me to find the whole scenario, from the planned organized pigeon shoot to the launching of a video drone to it being shot down, absurd and hilarious?

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
Yeah, that. What was the point of this? I can't tell if it's just a very poorly written article or a really stupid story, or both.
Quote:
Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), said his group was preparing to launch its Mikrokopter drone to video what he called a live pigeon shoot on Sunday when law enforcement officers and an attorney claiming to represent the privately-owned plantation near Ehrhardt tried to stop the aircraft from flying.
"It didn't work; what SHARK was doing was perfectly legal," Hindi said in a news release. "Once they knew nothing was going to stop us, the shooting stopped and the cars lined up to leave."
He said the animal rights group decided to send the drone up anyway.

I believe Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels did a movie about people of this caliber.

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
From reading the article, the timeline seems to be as follows:
- Hunting event is scheduled
- SHARK shows up to video event
- Law enforcement and attorney tell them not to
- SHARK convinces LE and attorney that there are no grounds to stop videoing
- Drone is launched
- Event is canceled
- Hunter shoots down drone
- Revenge is sworn
Item 4 is the most unclear to me. The normal and appropriate response from LE should have been to taze, shoot or arrest the people with the camera. Perhaps the high tech device confused or awed them?

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
Pigeons are treated as vermin all over the place. They just flat out poison them in Las Vegas, which can then harm other animals, like people's pet cats, that eat the pigeons. I don't know that I have a problem with them being shot just in an of itself. Extermination methods are never pleasant, and people hunt and eat birds, so I don't see shooting them as unusually cruel.
That being said, I always wonder at the mentality of people that kill for pure sport; trophy hunting, canned hunts, and now pigeon shoots. There's something wrong with them.

What's wrong with them is that they have never grown up. Growing up myself, I have often observed other kids being deliberately cruel to animals, it's as if they see them as 'things' to play with. This is only one example of the lack of maturity in human society. I have no problem with 'meat hunters' (you eat what you shoot), and hunting to control the population where natural predation has been reduced or eliminated. My only problem with exterminating pests such as groundhogs and prarie dogs, whose burrows are a hazzard to livestock, is that the wild animals were there first. In the west cattlemen have all but eliminated wolves on the lame excuse that they sometimes kill cattle, the wolves and other wild animals were there first and humans are invading their territory, not only killing the wolves but taking habitat from other natural species. .

I don't know if I mind the shooting of pigeons to exterminate them either, but from the link it seems they trap them a few days before and keep them in boxes and then release them to be shot at. That I do have a problem with.

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
Me too Watser?
It's not the shooting, it's the whole organizing and planning and trapping for the sole purpose of shooting that I find absurd. And yeah, it sounds cruel (but, I don't know how much of that site is fact and how much is exaggerated, which happens with all manner of advocacy groups). Probably not more so than food production though, sadly.

1. Visualizing the moment of impact from different perspectives.
2. Remember when Cheney shot some guy in the face?

Those hunter's were perfectly in their rights. Have you ever seen video drone poop on a statue? It's heinous.

Re: Unarmed drone shot down at pigeon shoot
The real travesty here is that we don't have video from even one angle, when we need it from at least three.

Yes, but he wasn't riding on a pony, therefor, not Yankee Doodle enough, so fair game.

They probably got the pigeon shoot idea from Apocolypto. Hey pigeon, if you make it to the end of the corn field, you can go free.

Why were they spying on a pigeon shoot with an unarmed drone?

They were spotting for the heavy artillery barrage.
Of cute little stuffed Poo bears, after all who could hurt a pigeon after holding a stuffed Poo Bear. They would probably just get the Pigeons and hold them, and cuddle them, pat them on the head and watch them fly away with a silly grin on their face, - and then 'BOOM', THEY SHOOT THEM DOWN.

If it was PETA they would have used a drone strike to kill all the pigeons as part of protesting man's explotation of pigeons.
In all seriousness ,this shows the level of fake in Hollywood movies. A bunch of guys with machine guns can't bring down a helicopter holding an escaping hero, while these guys who need pigeon's pratically tied down for them to hunt, can pop one out of the sky with a couple of shotguns.
