Default Podcasts that are totally obscure and worth listening to

Let's share podcasts.

JD and I have been listening to an awesome podcast called Welcome to Nightvale. 400 Bad Request

The format is a community radio station in a desert town that is the bastard love child of Rod Sterling/HP Lovecraft/Douglas Adams/Norman Rockwell.

It is fabulous. They tour and do live shows, I will catch them one day.

So what are you listening to?

"Welcome to Nightvale" is a totally obscure podcast that no one listens to, kind of like Marc Maron's WTF podcast or "Serial".

If you enjoyed "Welcome to Nightvale", then from the same production company, "Alice Isn't Dead" was worth it - it's a story, told in the form of a trucker talking on the CB while looking for her lost wife. Also "Within the Wires" was another novel storytelling concept which I thought I'd tire of but wound up listening to the whole season.

They have a third that I thought sucked and never picked it up.

I often listen to less popular spinoffs from other popular podcasts, like "Hooker on TJ Hooker", "Stage of Fools" (the unofficial "Royals" podcast), or "Presidents Are People, Too!". Usually, because they feature people from other podcasts like "We Hate Movies" or "The Flop House."

For skeptical podcasts, "Skeptoid" is still good for content, if you can get past the fact that it's hosted by a felon whose delivery is all stiff whiteness. I love "Oh No Ross and Carrie" but some other people think they're too bright and bubbly. "Inquiring Minds" is still kicking ass, but "Point of Inquiry" is changing hosts again, so I don't know what's going to happen.

And you might be interested in the "This Week in Microbiology/Parasitism/Virology/Evolution..." series of podcasts.

I don't know if it qualifies as obscure, but I fucking love Girl on Guy by Aisha Tyler. She's hella smart and fierce and hilarious and has geek cred up the wazoo.

I was just aping the the totally obscure and on Netflix style.

I was actually thinking about how does one find good podcasts, because I really dig Nightvale. It occurred to me that I could make a thread here and ask yall.

Plus, I just want to spread the love of Nightvale.

I heard small parts of Alice on a nightvale podcast. I thought it sounded cool, good to know it is.

Thank you for the recommendations.

Yes, the microbiology is my interest

I should have put a smiley around my dry sarcasm, but I was trying to post quickly just before leaving work.

Stuff I would recommend that I didn't mention before: "99% Invisible" - a design podcast; "Alcohollywood" - a movie discussion podcast with a professional mixologist as a cohost, so each movie gets a unique mixed drink and "drinking rules"; "I Was There Too" - interviews that focus on the side characters and bit parts of important scenes or movies; and "The Sword and Laser" - a science fiction/fantasy book club podcast.

Not to mention, almost all the NPR and public radio shows are available as podcasts - much easier than finding them at the right time.

Some of my favourites are Radio vs. the Martians (geek pop culture) and all-time  Caustic Soda (disturbing or gross science, history and pop culture), the latter of which alas is no longer active, but there are lots (maybe all) of the goodies still available on the feeds (and they have a handy "Download everything!" on their page causticsodapodcast.com)

Other faves are more standard in every playlist: Stuff you Missed in History Class, Skeptics with a K, The Cracked Podcast, The Infinite Monkey Cage...

Girl on Guy is no longer active either, I think. Still subscribed, just in case.

ETA: Monster Talk, a skeptical/science show about monsters.

I really wanted to like Nightvale, but it's got too much 'acting' for my tastes. Like, I wanted them to play it straighter and subtler, without the wacky voices and action scenes. If you like Nightvale, I had similar annoyances with one called Limetown, so you might like that one too.

I tend to like the long form non-fiction podcasts in the Serial vein, mostly crime stuff. The CBC does some good ones, like Someone Knows Something, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution's Breakdown is good, too, except THERE IS A PART WHERE THEY DO A DUMB ACTING VOICE that says "Lesson in the Law!" when they're going to explain some legal concept.

And I just found out that Offshore has a second season. The first one was really good. The central story is a crime, but it's more about the social and cultural context it took place in.

S-Town was really really good too. Apparently, some people were disappointed that it didn't use the Serial formula, so FYI, it is not Serial. Also it's probably best without spoilers.

And I haven't listened to it yet, but the youths seem to be enjoying the Beef and Dairy Network Podcast these days, which, as I understand it, is a parody of industry podcasts.

The last show she put it on indefinite hiatus. She overextended herself last year with performance engagements, and she wants to focus on directing.

Oh, forreal? I'm super behind on them so I hadn't noticed. :sadcheer:

I also enjoyed Missing Richard Simmons, which was recommended to be by Mr mediocrities. It is only about 6 episodes.

I avoided that one - I thought it might be a bit too much prying into the personal life of someone who has decided they want privacy.

Downloaded S-Town, but I'm still catching up to my vacation backlog. I also downloaded Movie Sign with Trace and Frank (the Mads from MST3K) - we'll see how works... I don't need more podcasts.

If you like interesting history lessons, delivered in 1.5-2 hour chunks (sometimes more), try "Dan Carlin's Hardcore History"--he's had histories (totalling sometimes 8-10 hours) on Genghis Kahn, the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, World War I--right now, I'm listening to what may be a one-episode discussion of the nuclear power era. They come out every three months or so. Others I listen to (sometimes, not every episode):

#GoodMuslimBadMuslim: Taz and Zahra (funny and informative--they're comics).

2 Dope Queens--recordings of standup comedy, hosted by Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams

Are You F*&#ing Sh!#%@ng Me?--random shit (kind of "stuff I didn't know that I think is interesting"--two friends of one of my daughters.

Code Switch (discussions of race)

Common Sense with Dan Carlin--same Dan Carlin who does Hardcore History, discussing his take on current issues.

Dear Sugar/Savage Love/Dear Prudence (agony aunts)

Nancy (about LGBT issues--just heard about it this week and subscribed, but haven't listened to it, yet)

Politically Re-Active with W. Kamau Bell & Hari Kondabolu

Radiolab (interesting one last week, about whether there are any checks on the President's control over the nuclear option)

Snap Judgment (story telling)

Stuff to Blow Your Mind (science geeks)

Stuff You Missed in History Class

The Chauncey DeVega Show (sometimes--he opens each podcast with about half an hour of what's going on with him, personally, then segues to an interview with someone interesting, about politics/history/race)

The Dinner Party Download (folks I know, who pull together music, news, and other stuff meant to help you hold up your own end of a conversation at a dinner party. I hear a lot of music I wouldn't otherwise hear, excerpts from books I otherwise wouldn't be aware of, and other tidbits. Worth checking out.)

The More Perfect Union Podcast--current politics, by a folks with a range of political views.

Mission to Zyxx is an improvised science fiction podcast, just like the website says. They improvise all the speech and the action, but then they go in after and clean it up and add awesome music and sound effects, and it comes out really good.

I was listening to one on my walk yesterday and I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to pee my pants right there on the trail.

It's not really that obscure, I don't think, it's just pretty new. Season 1 started last August, and we're about halfway into Season 2 (assuming both seasons have about the same # of episodes).

The Realness: an exploration of the life of the rapper Prodigy, who died last year from complications relating to Sickle cell anemia.
Aftereffect: an investigation into the Miami police shooting of caregiver Charles Kinsey while attempting to assist his autistic client Arnaldo Rios Soto in Florida, focusing on the care facilities for the developmentally disabled, and specifically the challenges faced by Arnaldo and his family.
Yo, Is This Racist? Andrew Ti and Tawny Newsome host- guests discussing racism and answering questions sent in by listeners.
Chapo Trap House: Dirty socialists shit on Jordan Petersen, mainstream liberals, and white supremacists.
Emil Amos' Drifter's Sympathy: one of my favorites: Musician Amos takes you through his exposure and experience of music, focusing on his relationship with a punk rock antihero as his spiritual guru, the evolution of music and the reasons for making it- Sebadoh, Sun City Girls, singles from Turkey in the 1970's, obscure tracks intermingles with his chaotic edge progression through his teens and twenties. Haunting, worth it.
Obscure with Michael Ian Black: he reads Jude the Obscure to you the listener, with commentary
Nerd Poker: Brian Posehn plays D&D with his friends, with the best metal opening songs ever
Spontaneanation: Paul F. Tompkins and friends perform a long-form improvised sketch, after listening to a guest be interviewed and then getting a surprise setting for the scene, incorporating details from the interview into the improv sketch. Older seasons are behind a paywall, but there's about 60 episodes available for free; additionally he has tons of people of color, women, and LGBTQIA improvisers on the show and it is awesome. PFT is a delight.
Small Town Dicks: true crime from I think the Northwest US; not usually my thing but so far fascinating.
The Champs: now defunct (2013-2015) but still available- Neal Brennan and Moshe Kasher do deep, irreverent, sporadic interviews with mostly black rappers and comedians- Aisha Tyler, Chris Rock, Too $hort, Big Daddy Kane.
Hello From The Magic TavernA podcast from The Vermillion Minotaur, a tavern in the magical land of Foon; co-hosted by Chunt the Shapeshifter and Usidore the Blue.
Whiting Wongs with Dan Harmon and Jessica Gao: a discussion about how to improve diversity in writer's rooms in Hollywood, with infuriating drunken tangents regarding sharks, but good guests, and Jessica is awesome.
Decoder Ring Theatre: Black Jack Justice specifically is what I liked; serial Noir in the old radio drama style; each chapter from one of the two PI's points of view; one male, one female.

So, I just realized it's been 6 months since Point of Inquiry published their last episode. I realized this because I wanted to look up the book being plugged on Inquiring Minds and accidentally typed the former name. PoI has had its ups and downs, it was probably the best when Chris Mooney and Indre Viskontas were co-hosts.

When the last long term sets of hosts left in 2017, CFI seemed to struggle with finding new hosts, announcing new hosts and then promptly backing off. The interim host seems to have stopped. I didn't really notice it had dropped out. I had started tuning it out a few years earlier. The hosts seemed to get more political than scientific, and I didn't really like Josh Szeps' politics.

(Chris and Indre left PoI in 2013 and created Inquiring Minds, which is still going strong - with Indre and Kishore Hari now. )

Hey guys, We Hate Movies is doing a "We Love Movies" for December. They're talking about movies they love, starting with Terminator 2.

:eager:

The Patreon pick is Star Wars. I bumped it up in my podcast queue because I'm 110% interested.

:woohoo:

Just to say I've also been loving Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. They are really fantastic. The WW1 series (Blueprint for Armageddon) especially so.

Point of Inquiry has been back, with two new alternating hosts. I'm mostly OK with the new hosts, but generally have liked the recent ones with Kavin Senapathy more.

I resurrected this thread to post about this one, which I found fascinating:

Dr. Sarah Taber on the Myth of the Destruction of Family Farms | Point of Inquiry

Quote:
On this episode, Kavin speaks with Dr. Taber on agriculture and the myth of the destruction of family farms. Part of this myth involves tackling whether big agribusiness destroyed these farms, and what sharecropping has to do with it. Topics also include how racism against various ethnicities displaced our country’s farmworkers, what really separates family and corporate farming, and the current narrative around field automation.
Basically, the "family farm" is a myth. For the majority of US history, farming has primarily been done by slaves, sharecroppers, or tenants. The land has usually been owned by wealthy whites.

So, there have been a few podcasts I've been thinking about listening to, like "I Podius" which is a recap of "I, Claudius" with Elliott Kalan (Daily Show/MST3K writer/The Flop House) and John Hodgeman.

...but I've put a limit on the number of new shows I add that decrease the diversity of the hosts. A lot of the people in my favorite podcasts are good people, but they're almost all white men in their 30s or 40s.
