The legal field is doing its part to keep checks (cheques) alive in the US.*

Lawyers here appear to be the absolute latest adopters of any and all technological advancements, especially if they relate directly to getting paid. Sometimes an actual checkque/k (put that in ALL CAPS and it'd look like a Klingon word for vomit) is the only way to pay on a contract.

Then again, another heavy hitter in the war against paperless economy would be the predatory checque/k cashing industry. Basically, people on the fringes tend to have trouble getting bank accounts, so a paper cheque/k is the best they can get - and while in theory they could get all of the money the piece of paper says, the most convenient and viable option is your local check cashing office, where they're happy to give you your money right away, for a not-entirely-modest fee. A neighborhood's average income is in inverse proportion to the number of check cashing services.

Patreon, after the last PR fiasco where they tried to make small donations more expensive, decided on a different tactic: Convince their creators to drop the $1 tier. Yes, Patreon is trying to improve their bottom line by making the creators look like assholes.

So I support 15 different creators, 10 of which are at the $1 level. Patreon's suggestion wouldn't stop me from paying at that level, only prevent new people to join at that level and "encourage" me to increase the support I give.

I don't know how well this will work. There are several content creators I've already passed on because I don't want to pay them more than people I like better. I also think the idea behind crowd funding is to get a lot of people to give you small amounts, and so I give to a decent number of different creators and not more to a fewer number. Also, I'm generally cheap, so fuck you Patreon.

Last year, I commended CFI's new host for the Point of Inquiry podcast, Kavin Senapathy. A month after I posted this, CFI fired her.

She recently wrote an opinion piece on here separation from the organization:
