In the Dutch boyscouts we had fleur de lis belt buckles. It's a Scouting thing but i don't know why.

You can blame those namby-pamby brits what started the Scout movement back at the turn of the 20th century. They chose it as a symbol, and it's carried over to nearly every national Scout organization since.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
Quote:
The recent home invasion and vicious attack on a lesbian woman in Lincoln, Nebraska is being described by the Human Rights Campaign as “truly horrific.” The LBGT rights organization is calling on federal authorities to investigate the alleged hate crime.
CNN reported that three masked men allegedly broke into the 33-year-old woman’s home early Sunday morning, tied her up, and carved words into her arms and stomach with a knife. One of the words included the derogatory slur “dyke.”
The men also spray-painted anti-gay graffiti inside the home and set the house on fire. Police said the fire did little damage.
The woman fled bound, naked and bleeding to her neighbor’s house.
“I was in shock,” the woman’s neighbor told CNN. “She was naked, her hands were tied with zip ties. All I could see was a cut across her forehead and blood running down.”

Masked men carve ‘dyke’ into lesbian woman, then set house on fire | The Raw Story
Ok, I want to believe this or at least give it the benefit of the doubt, but literally EVERY CASE I've ever read about where someone claims they were attacked and their attacker carved hateful words or swastikas in their bodies has turned out to be self-inflicted. I'm pretty sure this one is too.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
It is possible, but female mutilation is not unheard of. In the US there are many documented cases of women's bodies being mutilated in this and other ways. It is just that most often they are discovered on a corpse rather than a survivor. Had she died the mutilation wouldn't be all that surprising or questioned. It also occurs in attacks against men, but with less frequency.
That said, self-cutting is a serious mental health issue and all too common. When I was looking for statistics on mutilation, self-injury links flooded my results. So while I wouldn't discount that as a possibility too, I am just glad the woman is now safe and will get either the justice or the help she needs.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
Some of the cases I heard of were men who turned out to have done it themselves. There were a couple of cases in Germany where swastikas were supposed to have been carved into someone, at least one of them was a man.
I am always suspicious of these cases, so I was looking for evidence that it couldn't be true. But nobody saw the attackers, there was very little damage and she was tied with tie-rips (which just happens to be the only way you can actually tie yourself up). I'm not buying it. Still pretty sad though.

So let me get this straight,
A guy who fucks around on his dying wife is holding up traditional values of marriage.
A stable 27 year relationship with an American Hero is destroying the fabric of our society.

Chick-Fil-A Debuts New Homophobic Sandwich
Quote:
In a press conference to reporters, company representatives said the homophobic new sandwich will include the national fast food chain’s trademark fried chicken filet wrapped in a piece of specially-smoked No Homo ham that would be topped with a slice of Swiss cheese and lathered in a creamy new Thousand Island-based Fag Punching sauce.
"The Queer-Hatin' Cordon Bleu is our company's way of showing our firm commitment to strong, Christian family values," said Chick-fil-A spokesman Robert Gary, before adding that the vehemently anti-gay rights sandwich comes served in a combo with waffle fries and a medium soda for just $6.95. "From the very first morsel of this savory meal to the very last bite, customers can envision gays burning in hell with their sodomizing cohorts, and know that our sandwich is on their side.”

So we're talking about Chick-Fil-A here, right?
Have a look. I mean REALLY have a look.
Not only is the stupid strong with these clowns, but I think that's our own Jerome chiming in to the discussion.

Re: General LGBTQIA issues thread
LOL
Now CNET has picked it up.
Quote:
For here was this sturdy teen arguing the company's case in an almost corporate manner. She insisted the toys had been withdrawn weeks before the gay marriage utterances. Which didn't seem to match anyone else's recollection.
Someone wondered whether Farle was real. It was discovered that her profile photo was a stock photograph, rather a personal one.
|
And it's getting worse:
1. Buzzfeed reports more shiny new Facebook accounts have been created, posting suggestions on their newsfeeds that the Henson toys that were pulled were dangerous - which, after all, is the same bullshit that Chick-Fil-A was also trying to peddle. Sounds like grounds for the toy manufacturer to sue Chick-Fil-A for product disparagement (hint, hint).
2. The mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, has blocked Chick-Fil-A's expansion across from city hall because of their attitude.
3. An alderman in Chicago, Joe Moreno, has blocked them as well in his ward.

I have to say that I agree with Glen Greenwald on this one. The government should not be restricting people's ability to do business based on their political views.

The position of Chick-Fil-A runs contrary to Massachusetts state law.
They are being treated like any other business, and Chick-Fil-A is being treated like any other business that is vying for a finite resource: their application must be weighed against other businesses who also want that real estate. Decisions must be made, by some criteria or another.
If a business owner came in there, publicly espousing the belief that interracial marriage was a sin, do you think they'd get a permit to set up a franchise? NO.
If a business owner came in there, publicly espousing the belief that blacks were inferior species and not really human, do you think they'd get a permit to set up a franchise? NO.
If a business owner came in there, publicly espousing the belief that women should never have the vote, do you think they'd get a permit to set up a franchise? NO.
And most critically: if a business owner came in there who not only believed these things, but contributed millions of dollars to like-minded groups whose political agenda ran contrary to state civil rights in Massachusetts, do you think that business would get the permit they asked for?
All of the above ideas are not just patently stupid, but they also run directly in conflict with Massachusetts state laws. Why should the mayor of Boston, the state capital of Massachusetts, give a real estate permit to a company like that? Especially when there are dozens of other businesses to choose from? And these other businesses have owners do not espouse ideas which are contrary to the established laws in Massachusetts?

I view this as a human rights issue rather than a political view, personally.
