Jakarta? No! She went by plane
My firm is merging with (taking over) another firm and so we have acquired a few more offices.
I am going to our new Jakarta office in late February for just over two weeks.
It's going to be really, really busy but I've never been to Indonesia so I'm also veddy excited.
Here is the hotel I'll be staying in.

Me too! I'm hoping to be able to fly over to Bali on my last weekend there. I'm not holding my breath because there's a lot of work to do. Although I'm quite looking forward to it to be honest.

If you do go to Bali, stay away from Kuta unless you want to be surrounded by hawkers and drunk bogans. My vote is for Sydney, at any rate. :p

I love Sydney, CC. Not least because one of my best friends lives there. I've only got the weekend (if that evens happens), so Bali is my best option.

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
I've never been to Indonesia, so I can't recommend any sights to see, but if you want to read about Bali, I recommend Colin McPhee's memoir A House in Bali.
I read it just a few months back and it was fantastic.

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
Culture Shock: Indonesia was a pretty good book about getting along in Indonesia. It's a series. It tells you what to expect with local customs and the like.
One thing about Indonesia, people will never tell you no outright. They may mean no, but you get an indirect delaying answer instead.

So if you ask them if they want pie, they'll make up an excuse and leave?

Indonesia in Miniature Park, that sounds like it was made to order for Lees.

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
Thanks, Qingdai, for the enlightenment.
For me, Bali is that contradiction. A place on or near the equator which actually interests me. So...I envy, Leesifer, despite the presence of 'work'.
Borobudur calls, too. What's that like?

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
Borobudur is interesting, it's pretty out in the country. The locals tend to run to the top, touch the "Buddha in the bell" and run down. Walking up the whole circular area was more interesting, seeing the life of Buddha carved into stone bas reliefs. There's another temple complex near it that was very interesting.
Prambanan. Prambanan Temple Compounds - UNESCO World Heritage Centre
If you went to Surakarta (which I recommend eating the street pancakes with custard and tropical fruit ) or Yogyakarta, (touristy area) they'd be reasonable day trips to see either or both temple compounds. Yogyakarta and Surakarta were both capitols of kingdoms and have interesting Royal compounds to visit. Plus if you can, the puppet shows/music/dance portions are wonderful.
I really, really want to go back and take Qingdai jr.

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
OMG! I'm getting stupidly excited about this trip. It's going to be horrendously busy but I'm still hoping to see a bit of Indonesia.
I'm even excited about the flight. Upstairs on the Airbus 380. UPSTAIRS!

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
I started my packing today. Usually, I would pack the night before but as this is a work trip, I've had to pack both work clothes and going out clothes.
I leave at silly-o-clock Wednesday morning. It's over 30 degrees there now (with thunderstorms - which, who cares? It's over 30 degrees!)
Any poasts by me from Thursday onwards are going to be from Jakarta.

Why am I jealous? She did say "over 30 degrees" and "thunderstorms".
Tell me about 'Bali fever'.

Re: Jakarta? No! She went by plane
Ubud Bali! Go to Ubud! It's not too hot.
Denpasar and Kuta are awfully touristy and hot. Kuta has the beach though.
There was this one cafe where you eat in the middle of lotus ponds.

Once I know how much free time I'll have, I'll post here, Q. At the moment, I can't see having much time spare.
