Legs' Warm & Fuzzy
A thread for nice news stories, uplifting & feel-good articles, stories that warm your heart & make you smile.
Nobody knows who, but someone with a lot of Halloween spirit decorated this small southern Colorado town with hundreds and hundreds of pumpkins.Residents woke up Tuesday to find virtually every surface covered with the orange holiday icons. There were pumpkins left on front porches and at front gates, on the front and back steps of a church and all along the boundary of the city park.
Larry Taylor said there weren't any pumpkins when he walked his dogs at about 10 p.m. on Monday in the town of about 330 residents, 110 miles southeast of Denver.
But by the time Postmaster Nancy Pennington drove to work at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, they were everywhere.

Senior saved from money scam
An 84-year-old woman is thanking police and Federal Express employees for their quick work in saving her from sending thousands of dollars to claim an alleged lottery prize.
Kathleen Paulen of Shelby Township received a telephone call Monday from a man who told her she had won $1 million from Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. But the man, who claimed to be a federal agent, told Paulen she needed to send $12,500 to an address in Arizona before she could collect the grand prize.
Paulen took her Visa card and withdrew $7,500 from one bank, and $5,000 from another. She then went to the Federal Express office at 23 Mile and Van Dyke and sent the cash to the Arizona address.
The next day, Paulen had second thoughts about sending that much cash through the mail, said Shelby Township Police Sgt. Kenneth Underwood.
"She came into the police station on Tuesday and told me, 'I think I just did something I shouldn't have,'

* Legs thinks this is somewhere between warm & fuzzy and scary
The Hug Brigade
It's just to spread love," says Haugen. "There's so much going on right now that everybody needs love. And who doesn't love a hug?"
And so for four hours, the Hug Brigade embraced strangers far and wide. Some casualties wouldn't have anything to do with them, never breaking stride or feinting past like Dr. Sphincter around a group of lepers. Others, most others in fact, were into it. Most memorably, an elderly, snaggle-toothed woman who blossomed on the spot and hugged every member of the group.
"I was sitting around thinking, 'How can I make a difference?'" says Carrie Rupp, a 22-year-old pool-maintenance worker from Minneapolis and "instigator" of the Hug Brigade. "I wanted it to be simple, because everybody tries to make it super-complex and super-difficult to change something. And I thought, 'I really like giving hugs, and I'm really good at it, so why not just go stand out there and spread some love?' All you have to do is plant that seed and it just grows and grows and grows."
The current plan is to organize hug-ins twice a month. When the weather turns colder, the Brigade will hit the malls. They might spend the holidays going to old folks' homes.

Father raises funds for school children's shoes

Ilam resident Rodney Laredo responded to a story in The Press this year on children in Christchurch's poorest suburbs attending school with unsuitable shoes.
"The more I read the specific article, the more I thought something had to be done. We have a real problem on our own doorstep," Laredo said.
He went to six principals and requested a list of the names of children who were without adequate footwear. "I am a father of two young children myself. They have gone around the world twice. Kids their age don't even have shoes," he said.
Laredo started fundraising in June.
"It never ceases to amaze me that in this rather affluent world there are children whose fundamental needs aren't being met. It's a tragedy," he said.
He raised $3100 from St Christopher's parishioners in Avonhead to buy new shoes for the pupils.
Dowsons Shoes supplied the footwear at discounted prices, recently providing about 140 shoe vouchers to children from lower socio-economic areas. The shoes have a value of $20 to $50 a pair.
Pupils from Central New Brighton, Phillipstown, Rowley Avenue, Linwood Avenue, Wainoni, and Aranui schools received the vouchers.
Laredo also approached eastern Christchurch Rotary clubs, which will double the initial amount raised for school shoes next winter. "I don't think I've done anything special. I just wanted to help where I could."
Phillipstown School principal Tony Simpson said some families were having difficulty providing quality footwear, particularly during winter.
Rowley Avenue School received vouchers for 30 pupils.
Principal Maree Goldring was delighted by the community response. "It is hard for families sometimes to meet all their costs. The children love their new shoes and are coming to school very proud of them," she said.

Fighting spirit saves pensioner from attack
BERLIN (Reuters) - A 70-year-old British pensioner, trained in martial arts during his military service, dispatched a gang of four would-be muggers in a late-night attack in Germany.
"Looks like he had everything under control," a police spokesman from the German town of Bielefeld said of the incident last Friday.
The man, a native of Birmingham who now lives in Germany, was challenged by three men, demanding money, while a fourth crept up behind him. Recalling his training, the Briton grabbed the first assailant and threw him over his shoulder.
When a second man tried to kick him, the pensioner grabbed his foot and tipped him to the ground. At this point, the three men, thought to be aged between 18 and 25, fled, carrying their injured accomplice with them.
The pensioner, whose name was not immediately available, suffered light abrasions.

Warm and fuzziness in the news
Quote:
Gary Coleman marries a woman half his age... and twice his height
Pint-sized former child star Gary Coleman has revealed he married a woman almost half his age - and twice his height - at a private mountaintop ceremony in Nevada in August last year.
Coleman revealed his relationship with Shannon Price was not only his first marriage - but also the first time he had been intimate with a woman.
Coleman, who rose to fame as Arnold Jackson in the US sitcom Diff'rent Strokes, met Price while he was filming 2006 movie Church Ball in Utah.
It was 22-year-old Price who proposed, but Coleman then surprised her on her birthday by whisking her to a hilltop in the Valley of Fire State Park to exchange vows.
"I never got the opportunity to be romantic or feel romantic with anyone before Shannon.
"I wasn't saving myself. She just happened to be the one."
The couple played down their differences in height and age and said they did not see that as important.
"I don't have issues with age, I have issues with intelligence," Coleman said.
"She's more intelligent than I am and that's what matters to me."
"He was 10ft tall to me because he was sweet and I really liked his personality," Price added.

Ewwww. He's 40 and she's 22. According to the Ick Factor calculation he shouldn't hook up with anyone younger than 27.

Re: Legs' Warm & Fuzzy
That depends on your age when you got together.
The Ick Factor calculation is age divided by 2 plus 7, so long as they're legal and all. According to that a 21 year old man shouldn't date anyone younger than 18, a 30 year old 22, etc.
