Cool.
Do you ever use the
Save for Web feature? Because it's in there that you get the best compression results for viewing on a computer monitor.
Here's what you do, using an example of a RAW image I shot yesterday:
Original image size in this case is 3264 x 2448 pixels at 300 dpi. That's way too big.
So, first I go to Image Size (Alt + Ctrl + I) and change the dpi to 150. I could change it to 72 dpi, which is all a computer monitor can read, but 150 seems to give better results.
Then I resize the image by bringing it down so it fits within the FF jpeg attachment limits (which is 620 pixels on any one axis, max).
Make sure that Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Image are all ticked. Resample Image should be set to Bicubic.
Click Ok.
Then go to Save for Web and that will bring up a new dialogue box that looks kinda complicated, but isn't really.
Along the top of the dialogue box will be some tabs. Make sure you are on "2-Up". That will show you your original uncompressed image on the left, and the optimized image on the right.
Now, just below the Save, Cancel and Done buttons will be a wee arrow thingy, to the right of the "Preset/Unnamed" drop down arrow. It's only small, but if you hover over it, it will read "Optimize Menu". Click that. In the pop up dialogue box that appears, select "Optimize to File Size". In the desired file size box, type "100". (You're allowed bigger files than this, but 100 kbs is easier on the FF server
). Cick OK. Click Save.
This will bring up the "Save Optimized As" dialogue box, and in there you just give your file a meaningful name, put it in the folder you want it in, and then click OK.
Then, to make sure you don't upset your original capture, close the remaining file and do not save. You will now have two files - your original unadulterated file, and your optimized for web file.
Upload the optimized file, and viola! you have a pic online that is much lighter on the unsightly artifacting, as displayed in my attachment.
Good luck, and keep posting them pics!
