The Absence of Pain
Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure and the absence of pain.
John Stuart Mill
Pain is part of every experience. It has been said that the senses suffer when they do their work. Pain cannot be avoided except by avoiding experience. But pain need not be long-lasting.
If I seek happiness and desire to subject my senses to pleasurable experiences then there will be happiness. I continuously try to experience pleasure by seeking out those things which I like immediately or that I like after becoming accustomed to. It's a time consuming search.
The Searcher
The darkness is there,
It is most clear,
I must prepare.
Because I care,
To find my way.
