Re: The Gallery of Awesome
Well, I think this is awesome, anyway:
Over Christmas, while my brother was here, he had a p. good idea about doing I Got You, Babe as Tom Waits. So we practiced for maybe 30 seconds or so, then went back into the office where Matlock was working, made him stop working, and did our rendition for him, and then asked if he knew what it was. He said, "It's Tom Waits singing I Got You, Babe," and my brother was all, "NOPE. It was TWO Tom Waitses singing I Got You, Babe!"
So anyways, yeah, we are probably going to go on tour soon, just FYI.

Re: The Gallery of Awesome
Have you seen the 'Easter Egg' Missile Command game on YouTube? Click over on the right side of a YouTube page (in the empty part to the right of where it recommends other videos seems to work for me) - then type "1980" (type the scare quotes as well as the numbers)
FOR GREAT JUSTICE!
If that hasn't wasted enough of your day, try a google image search for: atari breakout

I wonder if they're just doing word-to-word translation though (which at least in the case of ASL and English would not be very good, since ASL has very different word order and so forth)... I've also seen systems using Microsoft Kinect for speech-to-sign translation.
Considering how bad even English to Chinese translation is, I imagine they're all at a very rudimentary level at the moment. State-of-the-art MT systems use corpora of millions of parallel sentences to train, and I imagine such data is pretty scarce for sign language.
But if people used tools like these and combined with user-generated translations, one could crowd-source a corpus... (obviously not as high quality as from professional translators, but as it turns out, lots of amateur translations can help a lot. You'll just need more of them)

Re: The Gallery of Awesome
I wondered about that, too, and the article implies that it's just like you say--that they're just doing single word translations. It says it recognizes 50 words now and should recognize about 200 by launch.
So that's not a whole lot, and it's more like a simple dictionary than a translator, but the gesture recognition itself is really impressive, and could contribute to more robust translations in the future like you say.
