(And Katie told me yesterday that she's taking the second half of the 2-semester course Professor Groper teaches next year. She didn't think she could put up with having to deal with him two semesters in a row.)



As an aside, as someone who has been occasionally spotted on-campus with a decent camera set-up, I've been occasionally asked to take pictures for various events -- basketball games, for instance. As it happened, my camera bag was in my office when Katie came to visit. On a whim, more or less, I asked if I could take her picture. I told her, "I know that for most people of your generation, having your picture taken is a daily occurrence and no big deal, but when I was your age, there were no digital cameras [technically, there were, but they were very rare, and very expensive], and I've never gotten into the habit of carrying a phone with me wherever I go. So, taking a picture of someone is still kind of a big deal to me." I told her that I'd like to get a picture to remember her by, since "All too soon you'll leave us and go on to do wonderful things, and probably forget all about me."

She said that of course I could take her picture, "But I promise, I will never forget you; you're the main reason I haven't transferred to someplace else!" And she gave me a big hug. D'awwww!



In related news, so many students complained about Professor Slacker that the Dean and the Department Head had a "conversation" with him. They "read him the riot act" is how I heard it. Hopefully that means he'll at least make some effort to pretend that he cares about the students and their education. We can only hope. Or maybe he'll be so angered and humiliated at having been called out that he'll quit at the end of the semester. That ... wouldn't be such a bad thing, if you ask me.

I'm not a religious person, so I find it both very touching and somewhat amusing that, in the past few days, two different students have told me that it's obviously "God's will" that I'm here -- because the students need at least one person in the department who cares about and supports them unconditionally.
