At least 14 injured, one killed, in Cincinnati night club shooting

good thing nobody was killed except the one who deserved to be, but your side is going to have to get more into guns if you want to do more than wound people.

I agree, it was good no one was killed, so that these lawmakers can feel an ache from the bullet wound everytime they get on their knees for the NRA.

Re: Another Mass Shooting
Disarm All Domestic Abusers Now
Naturally, the Republican Party has made it easier for domestic abusers to purchase firearms, because they are evidently constitutionally required to be on the wrong side of every issue. I don't condone political violence of any sort, but I'm finding it difficult to get worked up about this particular shooting. If Republicans took gun violence seriously, this probably wouldn't have happened, because he probably wouldn't have been able to obtain a gun.
I'm also not surprised a Bernie Bro ended up committing gun violence. These people certainly have demonstrated their own authoritarian tendencies, which I may address in further detail later (I need to return to work shortly).

Yet to be seen. Steve Scalise is in critical condition, he was shot in the hip which likely means a lot of blood loss.
Anyway, it seems like just yesterday Republicans were arguing it's fine for (Republican) politicians to assault people. Now some of them are telling us that it's Democrats who are advocating violence. While there surely are some on the extreme left (the "black bloc" types) who do, you don't get rhetoric from Democratic politicians about "2nd amendment solutions" or the like which is pretty routine from the right-wing. You don't see many left-wing demonstrations where they walk around with high-powered firearms and pretend like it's not meant as a threat.
I'm also sure that, just as they forgot (or didn't bother to check) that Julius Caesar was performed with an Obama-like actor in the title role before without it causing a controversy, they will forget about all the Obama and Clinton effigies and most particularly about the far more deadly 2011 Tucson shooting which targeted a Democratic event. Gabby Giffords was shot in the head and 6 people were killed. But we were told not to politicize that.
What is notable though, is that the shooter had a history of domestic violence. This is very common among mass shooters, regardless of their politics or religion. We ought to be doing something about that.

An aside comment: Domestic abuse + guns = White man honour killings.

Re: Another Mass Shooting
David Frum is talking sense:
When Prayer Alone Does Not Suffice - The Atlantic
Quote:
Like ancient villagers, Americans accept periodic plagues as a visitation from the gods, about which nothing can or should be done. The only permitted response is “thoughts and prayers”—certainly never rational action to reduce casualties in future. Even to open the discussion as to whether something might not be done violates the taboos of decency: How dare you politicize this completely unpredictable and uncontrollable event! It is as if gun violence were inscrutable to the mind of man, utterly beyond human control.
The fact that such things do not happen anywhere else with anything approaching the same frequency—that too is the work of some ineffable mystery. Who can say why such things happen so seldom in Canada and Australia and Britain and Germany and France, and so often in the United States? Who would be rude enough even to wonder?
|
Also, this:
House GOP-led hearing on deregulation of gun silencers cancelled after shooting
Finally, this modest proposal from E. J. Dionne also seems timely:
E.J. Dionne Jr. - Senators Should Apply Pro-Gun Logic to the Capitol

Re: Another Mass Shooting
So, I just got finished listening to an hour or so of talking heads on NPR desperately trying to pretend that "both sides" are "equally responsible" for the political divide in this country.
In fairness, one of them, a Republican, wasn't having that. At all. No, he was insisting that it's entirely the fault of "bigoted" and "hateful" and "uncompromising" rhetoric -- from the Left.
I don't think so.
Remember how, for eight long years, Obama desperately tried to cultivate bipartisanship with Republicans? Remember how, despite Obama bending over backwards to accommodate Republicans, their only response was to demand more, because they were dissatisfied with him caving to only 80% of their demands?
Remember how prominent Republicans openly bragged that they had no intention of compromising with the Democrats -- ever -- on any issues? Remember how prominent Republicans voted against their own proposals when/if Obama endorsed them?
Remember Trump suggesting that if Clinton won the election that he might not accept the results, and that his supporters should consider open revolt in the event of a Clinton victory? Remember Trump suggesting that if Clinton were elected, a "Second Amendment solution" would perhaps be in order? Remember Ted Nugent openly advocating for Obama's assassination, then being invited to the Trump White House as an honored guest?
And these people insist that "both sides" are "equally responsible" for the current political divide? That there is some Grade-A, 100% pure bullcrap.

Yeah. Don't you know that it was the Left that shared pictures featuring the watermelons in the White House garden. Or the images equating the President with a bone in his nose. Or reserved all of their vitriol for the alleged foreign born Obama. The Left is totally responsible for all of that.

Nonono you don't understand. Bernie once said Trump was dangerous, so he totally needs to take responsibility for practically ordering his followers to shoot an entirely different republican.

Republicans not compromising: standing up for their beliefs/convictions/principals
Democrats not compromising: unrepentant, hate-filled obstructionists
That is how Republicans have been framing the divide for at least a decade and it only got worse during Obama's administration. This is a no-win situation for Democrats. Play the Republican game and you are an obstructionist who hates America, compromise and you are a pussy who won't stand up for your own principals.
In the Republican lexicon, compromise is a four letter word.

Las Vegas - Lawyers, Guns & Money
Over 50 dead. Fucking hell. If I'm not mistaken, that makes this the worst mass shooting in American history.
The shooter was a white dude, though, so at least we can be assured it wasn't terrorism.
