I finally broke down and got a Steam account. The reason for doing is because I recently purchased new graphics cards for my computer that come with free games that require Steam activation.
So to those who play PC games and use Steam, how is it? Are you happy with the service?

I'm pretty happy with my Steam account. It does what I want it to and only rarely has problems. I really wish I could find a setting in the client that would throttle download speeds when it gets updates or new games, it seems to just take everything it can and I can't do much else until it's finished unless I pause it.
I've had no problems with it. I've downloaded Skyrim using it, three times now. So that is sort of a problem as it doesn't give you an installer. It just allows you to download purchased programs again. Not the most efficient way of doing things, IMO.
I replaced my computer so hopefully I won't need another three hour download. I almost bought a physical copy the last time, but the price hasn't dropped at all.

When Steam first popped up it was crap. Or, at least, I hated its guts completely - and now I don't remember why. I dumped it fast. Many years later people were talking about it like it was sliced bread and I couldn't imagine why such a crap thing could be so good to so many people. Somebody eventually told me that all those old problems were a thing of the past. There are still some aspects of Steam I don't like, but those are the same critiques I have about the Kindle and other cloud computing services - namely that the service can deny you access to your stuff.
I have no complaint otherwise for this new Steam. I have many games now and for a lot less than I would had I tried to buy them at the store. I've also re-acquired several older games that I loved but lost somewhere along the way.
The biggest thing people love about new Steam are the sales. I'm still new enough that I don't know when they happen. There's the huge summer sales that make people cry and squeal and pull their hair out and wail and gnash their teeth.
If you're looking for services that provide great games, there's also Gog.com and Gamers Gate. There may be a lot of overlap with the games provided but it's good to have options.
I agree with Bort about the ability to deny you access to stuff, like your saved games if you choose the cloud save bit. The only other minor beef I have is sometime Steam updates can suck majorly and you have to wait for them to release a patch before you can play any game.
Also their sales rock. And Steam kicks the pants off EA's Origin.
