Re: Health Care Reform Dead
Looks like my republican CongressCritter has fallen in love with Glen Beck with his videos on the front of his website. No mention about townhalls at all. I've been writing for 2 weeks but no response. I guess "not a republican" types are not allowed at his town halls.

It sure can seem like it sometimes, but if you look over the long term, things do tend to improve. Maybe more slowly and less consistently than we'd like, but they do improve.
Being defeatist about setbacks doesn't really help.
(And I'm not just lecturing you. I get pretty frustrated sometimes myself.)

Re: Health Care Reform Dead
To be fair "Do you think the government should stay out of Medicare?" could be interpreted as a question about whether or not the government should make any changes to the program.

Re: Health Care Reform Dead
The question that made the TPM headline is kind of crapulous. It could easily be interpreted to mean "the government should abolish Medicare" or "the government shouldn't fool with Medicare." I don't know how I would answer question that is a logical impossibility and I don't see how those results would be meaningful since there is no option for "That question contains a hidden premise." That said, the cross tabs do show a lot more support for the government keeping out of Medicare among McCain voters. The birther numbers are much more revelatory. Only 35% of McCain voters think Obama was born in the US. lol.

From the same page:

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who is a a staunch champion of the religious right and an opponent of President Obama on all things under the sun, has a new line against the Democrats on health care: Keep the government off my body!

Re: Health Care Reform Dead
OK, I can kind of see how that could be interpreted as something a little less stupid.
But I'd like to see the results of a less ambiguously worded trick question. There do seem to be a lot of people out there who honestly think Medicare is not government run.

Could they be answering, with the question being phrased as above, that government should get rid of Medicare?

No, I don't see a reasonable way for someone to read the question "Do you think the government should stay out of Medicare?" as "Do you think the government should get rid of Medicare?"
Since Medicare is and has always been a government-run program the only sane interpretation I can think of is the one mentioned above, that the government should not make any changes to the current Medicare system. It's either that or the question really is incredibly fucking retarded, instead of just sounding retarded.

No...I'm betting that they are saying that the government should not fuck with Medicare.
I dare you to go to any public meeting attended by thousands of older folks and demand that Medicare be terminated. I have my doubts you'd get out with your ears unscathed, if not totally boxed into bleeding pulps.
We've already been down that road and we know what most people want.

Then you must admit that it is a nonsensical question. Such as below:
Do you think the living human heart should stay out of the living human body?

That is another fair interpretation of the answers to that nonsensical question.

Yep...And it fairly matches the groundswell outcry when dumbshit Dumya Bush wanted to 'privatize Medicare'.
We already know that the dumbshits WANT Medicare, even if they are fucking clueless as to its being a government program. So, it is massive ignorance which is motivating the responses.
I'd say that given that earlier groundswell of opinion, that my interpretation is much closer to the actuality than your assinine interpretation.

Re: Health Care Reform Dead
It occurred to me today that the thread title here is a bit macabre.
Just how many dead do we expect to come out of this reform effort? Is this where we keep count?

The whole survey was full of trick questions, though, so the stupid wording was intentional, if not exactly ironclad.
If you're doubting that people are insane, they asked if respondents considered Hawaii part of the US, and 6% said no. 4% were unsure. And only 62% said they believe Obama was born in the US. So I am still pretty sure that some significant portion of the 'government should stay out of Medicare' responses were genuinely clueless.
FWIW, it's a probably midday landline phone poll, as the respondents seemed to skew old and conservative.

Re: Health Care Reform Dead
Waitaminute. You're saying Saddam Hussein wasn't responsible for Nineeleven? That Barack Obama isn't mooslim?
Reminds me of Spy Magazine's calls to representatives in Congress: "Do you support the efforts by the US to halt the ethnic cleansing underway in Freedonia?" A sad number of staffers and actual reps mouthed their strong support for protecting and nurturing this imaginary Marx Brothers nation.
