Saw "The Rise of Skywalker" yesterday.

Man, so much conflicting emotions. It's not a good movie, but I enjoyed parts of it. I'm still processing how I feel.

Right now, I'm kind of sad for how much better this movie could have been. It really, really needed Carrie Fisher - you can tell that the movie had to make due without her, and it suffered for it.

JJ Abrams should not have written and directed it. He made a lot of choices, and they all pretty much sucked. You can tell that he didn't know how (or didn't want) to cope with the story that Rian Johnson left him with, so he just retconned a bunch of plot points.

The thing I wanted least to see?

I haven't fully spoiled myself, but I have accidentallied on a couple of things -but I won't comment on any of that until after I've seen it.

I really haven't been looking forward to this movie. The fallout from the Last Jedi has ruined it for me. I mean, I mostly enjoyed it, thought it had some big flaws or not so great execution. Some big fat morons really laid into it and went out of the damn minds. And I don't want to be associated with that kind of reactionism.

And now that JJ got to run the last movie. Guh. He sometimes has good ideas and even on some of those times does a good enough job getting them done. But I haven't unreservedly enjoyed anything he's done since, well, since the first season of Alias.

I'm only going to see Rise of Skywalker just because of momentum.

I'd forgotten entirely it was coming out, and despite being an active internet nerd, did not see any news articles about the line up for tickets involving tents. Still gonna see it.

Right now I'm kinda more stoked about this.

I saw it over the holidays and really enjoyed it.

I also really enjoyed The Last Jedi, so what do I know :-D

I think I've said before that I'm easily pleased. It felt like a Star Wars movie to me and I didn't mind the reveal that specious put in spoilers. I would be interested to know if that was the plan all along or if it was a reaction to the whiners after Force Awakens and Last Jedi.

I don't think the movie was perfect or even close, but it was enjoyable. I thought Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were fantastic.

My biggest complaint about JJ is the usual one... too. much. fucking. lens flare.

I enjoyed "The Last Jedi" too, and I think that's where my frustration comes from - TLJ took the franchise in a bold, new visionary direction, and JJ pushed it right back on the beaten path. Most of my negativity is coming from that.

When I was in the moment, I did like a lot of the adventure. This is almost entirely due to the stellar cast.

The good news: 1) It didn't outright suck. 2) It was actually p good and enjoyable. 3) I liked it about as much as The Last Jedi, a little more than The Force Awakens.

There were some big things I didn't like. There were some little things I didn't like. But even despite all the things that I didn't like, I still enjoyed it. And at the same time I'm glad the Big Story is done. I don't think it's the filmmakers' fault. I think the overhyped manchildren who whined about stupid shit and their collectively ruined childhoods did that for me. It's a shame, too. I shouldn't hold someone else's opinion(s) against a piece of art especially when they didn't create it.

Star Wars: The Next Generation went places I didn't expect, and for the most part, that's okay.

Just got back. I got bored during parts, rolled my eyes hard at parts. Disney did it's usual excellent emotional manipulation in the climax. Wouldn't have missed it, though.

I once mentioned that I thought Poe and Finn had excellent chemistry. Apparently, that wasn't just my imagination. I read an interview with Oscar Isaac yesterday in which he said that he had wanted the two characters to become an official couple, and had played the role of Poe with that endgoal in mind. Unfortunately, Disney not only vetoed the idea, but deliberately (and according to Isaac, against his wishes) included a brief scene in The Rise of Skywalker which was put there specifically to make it clear that Poe is heterosexual.

That scene only succeeded in giving me the impression that Poe is bi.

The desire to avoid controversy in China and other international markets was probably a factor there.

Too many new characters introduced unnecessarily.

Too many McGuffins: We need to go to this place to find out where to go to get that item, which we then need to enable using this secret - and that will tell us where we need to go to.... :snore:

Space horses!

How can they spend billions making trilogies, and not employ some decent scriptwriters to work out a coherent plot before they begin?

Agree completely.
It's not like 42 years was to little time to come up writers who could produce decent scripts. Hell! they coulda grown their own.
