Sexism in the conscious community is real and wolves in conscious sheeps clothing are everywhere.
I had this experience last night at a party in the Bay. A party billed as a “safe, conscious dance space”. This party was attended mostly by 35 to 50+ aged people.

I am standing in a doorway waiting for some friends to come say goodnight and a man approaches me with that: I-am-acting-as-though-I am-casually-finding-myself-here, (although I watched him not so subtlly making his way toward me for several minutes).
“Hello there Beautiful Goddess (insert best BLINGBLING smile...my name is______”...as he opens his arms and moves toward me to hug me.
Not knowing him at all, I generally don’t hug men on the first meeting unless they are being introduced by a mutual friend.
Many women have this policy and I think that the hugging thing is the first “test” some men use to feel women up…( see the “MmMMMm….hands caressing the length of back, hip holding pull back eye gaze move)....
“Oh heeeey, girl. I am SOOOO PRESENT TO THIS MOMENT AND I SEEEEEE YOUUUUUUU”. (puke, gag).
I reach my hand toward his and shake it firmly..not hard and pumping, but definitely firm. I look him in the eye and smile warmly, diverting said hug.
“Hi”, I say. “I am manyrivers”, pleasantly and with a smile.
Before I am even done speaking he pulls back letting go of my hand.
“WHOA there Goddess!!!”, he says.
“We aren’t in the Boardroom! this isn’t a DEAL we are making here.
Let’s try that again, shall we?”
He takes my wrist in his hand and with the other, weakly grasps my fingertips with his and says,
“Now isn’t this better? More appropriate?”
I make a not so subtle face as I pull my hand from his and look away for my friends.
“WOW, no?”, he exclaims…..seriously surprised that his snaggy handclasp is such a turn off and positioning his body so that I have to look at his face again.
“What kind of woman shakes hands like that?!”
“Um, a 47 year old no bullshit Mother and Entrepreneur does.”, I reply matter of factly, meeting his gaze.
“Oh reeeeeally?....an Entrepreneur, huh, and no bullshit?” (insert air quote marks as he repeats “bullshit”).
“Yeah. Really.”, I reply.
Chuckling out loud he now says,
“Well….considering how you dress and how you move on the dancefloor (insert head to toe eye rape)... I am just so surprised at the force of your energy, Goddess...you might want to tone that down a bit.”
At this point my friends appear and I proceed to ignore him and say goodnight to my friends.
As I turn to leave he says, “Wait a second there….you’re leaving? We were just getting acquainted!”
I give him a hard look and his “tisk” is audible as he turns away, shaking his head.
Deep breath.
Let me break it down for you, Mr. Fucked Up Spiritual New Age Dickhead:
I am SO TIRED of conscious community being billed as safe when clearly it is NOT.
I am SO TIRED of men who have fallen into the bosom of “the Goddess” and remain there sucking the shit out of her tits and claiming to respect women while all the while using the lexicon of consciousness as a play for ass.
I am SO FUCKING TIRED of the word GODDESS which has been co-opted by the dominant paradigm being used as some entre line.
I am SO FUCKING TIRED of men who use this language and shame women at the SAME TIME IN THE SAME BREATH.
I am SO TIRED of being objectified and my boundaries INTERPRETED by assholes that still purport that how a woman dresses is somehow indicative of her sexual availability.
I am SO SERIOUSLY FUCKING TIRED of men, especially in the ecstatic community not addressing this!!!
I am SO TIRED of overhearing narcissistic asshats prey on women new to the community, listening to them getting snow jobbed within earshot at parties by dicks that think that calling a woman GODDESS somehow implies that they see and respect the feminine.

I am a beautiful woman. I am an intelligent woman. These are not mutually exclusive.
Soon enough I will pass through the veil of sexual viability and become completely invisible as my external beauty fades and:
I am actually kind of looking forward to being out the game.
I look forward to being able to exist as a HUMAN and not a sexual object. I have no idea what that is like...it is sobering.

I am not a journalist, though, so I am not in competition for that title. And competing for most manly is like competing for who is the best at second grade, anyway.

A few years ago, I guess, Popular Mechanics had some stupid feature on the N number of skills you needed to be a real man or something. It was full of a bunch of super-dumb shit like "installing an antivirus program on your Windows computer" and "plugging in your television" and shit, and then had a couple of 'hardcore' things tossed in, including a kayak rescue that was being seen as aspirational or something, like that recipe for roast bear in The Joy of Cooking, I guess.

I had done that one, though, too. I passed some sort of test for some kind of wildwater lifeguard certification that included rescuing a capsized human dummy plus their kayak and towing them back to shore simultaneously.

But why, Lisa Pea, if you passed that certification, do you not remember what it was even called? Wouldn't you have had, like, a certificate on your wall? Well, no I didn't, because while I was allowed to take the full advanced skills test, eleven year olds were ineligible to be certified at that level.
