I find this subject a little confusing because I feel like most people in the US take off their shoes at home but I also hear it said that Americans don't do this. But I don't trust my own intuitions on this because my mom is from Sweden, where taking off your shoes at home is basically universal and guests doing it is expected. It's not quite as serious as in Japan where you generally do it before even entering the house (whereas in Sweden you take them off just inside) and you might even do it at a restaurant, but it is enough that the difference between Swedes and Americans is remarked on.

But it seems to me that most Americans do take them off at home, even if it's clearly not universal. Apparently there's a bit of variation, with a small majority of Americans always or usually taking off their shoes, but at the same time most Americans do not ask guests to take their shoes off.

In our household growing up we would ask guests to take their shoes off, but maybe not for a cocktail party (but always for me or my siblings' friends).

So, anyway, poll.

In the winter I take my shoes off because it's always raining and they are wet and probably muddy. Or even snowy.

In the summer I take my shoes off because my feet want to breathe free.

Obviously there are no other circumstances or any middle ground.

I like my cozy slippers at home, take off shoes just inside the door. There are exceptions though, like if I'm getting ready to go out on the town - will wear my fancy shoes inside to check myself out in the mirror.

I would go barefoot all the time if I could, but a bout of plantar fasciitis put an end to that.

Americans used to think asking guests to remove their shoes was a bit weird -- there's a scene in The Producers (1967) where Max and Leo are asked to do so, and they react in shock as if they've been asked to get naked -- but while it's still not the default, nobody I know bats an eye about it. Some guests (maybe half or more) even ask whether they should remove their shoes; we generally don't have them do so, except for the Li'l Puppet's nasssty teenager friendses, since most of the house has hardwood.

Usually remove shoes at home. There are special shoes for going out in the back yard that live next to the back door, and otherwise no need to keep shoes on. Interestingly, no such rule at my parents' house, either as a kid or now. More shoes-on there.

As a guest, if host doesn't have shoes on when I enter, I will ask "shoes on or off?" to at least signal that I might take my shoes off, and the answer is usually just a shrug. If guest has shoes on, shoes stay on. As a host I would never ask guests to remove their shoes; if they are comfortable doing so that is fine. If not, that is also fine.

I would like of like to live in a culture that has Russian-style tapochki, which are soft slippers for inside use, with pairs available for guests. But kinda works best in a cold place.

Hmm, same here.

Actually my sister keeps a pair of slippers at my parents' house ... but she often arrives there after mucking out horses or digging allotment gardens so that makes more sense. The rest of us don't usually bother when there.

I have had a couple roommates who like to keep their shoes on in the apartment, to the point where there were times I found him napping with his shoes on (feet off the bed, but still).

This made it so I didn't want to go around barefoot, and so I would either wear slippers (in the winter) or flip-flops (in the summer) around the apartment.

But if I live with non-shoe-keeper-onners (aka shoe-taker-offers), I generally ask guests to remove their shoes if they're not just staying in the entrance, and certainly if they're going anywhere carpeted/with rugs. This does not generally get any reaction from guests.

I guess for the first option I left off the possible exception that dress shoes, and in particular, shoes that were not worn outside can be worn inside (in Sweden, people might bring a second pair of shoes to change into when they arrive at a dressy event, for example). In most cultures it's not a hard rule that there are no shoes ever, just no outdoor shoes. At my parents' house, adults at a party wouldn't be expected to take their shoes off unless they were going into the carpeted areas.

I usually wear crocs (over socks of course) indoors. They are comfy and hard wearing, and have the added benefit of infuriating any visitors who labour under the misapprehension that 'style' is important and that they (the visitors) know what possesses style and what doesn't.

The ones at the top right of the image in that nice dark beige colour would be my choice, though the ones I'm wearing right now are a lighter colour than that.

I usually wear them with the heel straps rotated forward over the insteps, so that they're more easily 'slip-on-and-offable'.

The crocs have the benefit over slippers that they're tough enough to venture short distances outdoors when the path is clean and dry - so I can take out the trash without changing into shoes.

My feet get too damned hot to wear shoes in my own damned house. When I need to protect my feets, I have this wonderful pair of slip-on leather sandals, with multiple woven straps reminiscent of Jason and the Argonauts, that I've had for somewhere between 20-100 years. One strap broke recently, and another couple-few are on their way. I may not be able to save them. :sadcheer:

I've never had them myself, but I don't think Crocs are that ugly. I've always meant to try them sometime.

I also think that Birkenstocks with nice wool socks looks pretty good.

I know not to wear that out in public, but I wear socks + stocks around the house all the time. It's really, really comfortable, and I look extremely cool.

The 'take your shoes off' etiquette in North America has weakened from a fear of invisible shoe gremlins into a question of cleanliness, comfort, and utility. It's very much handled case-by-case with no real consensus.

In public places -
Are you wearing galoshes or anything else which doesn't belong indoors? Take them off.

Are your shoes filthy/muddy/snowy? Clean them or take them off.

If the first two rules don't apply, you're probably OK.

Anywhere private, does your host own immaculate floors of precious zamboni hardwoods? Take them off.

Otherwise? See what your host does. If they take their shoes off, probably good ettiquette to take off yours. Though 40% of the time they'll tell you not to bother.

Is it your own home? Your own choice. You might even have special 'inside shoes'.

Et cetera.

“Mahalo for removing your shoes” or variants of are quite common in hawaii, especially around the beaches. I don’t know about average America general home policy but on vacation it’s often to be as messy and inconsiderate as possible so a few reminders is good.

In california shoes on or off is generally utilitarian and thus depends on if the surrounding area has dirt or literal crap to track inside. There are however pockets of hippies and asian cultures that view taking off shoes before entering a sign of respect to the house and residents.

At my house (which follows the American ideal of do what ever the fuck you want) the general custom is to take off the shoes unless just running back into the house to grab something important that was supposed to go for the ride too. But I typically take off my shoes shortly after entering, and if I don't The Kid does strictly enforce this custom and she persistently reminds me until I take my shoes off.

I don't enforce the no-shoes rule with guests. Most just follow my lead, are totally oblivious (like my former roommate), or they're wearing lace-up boots that are a pain the ass to take-off, especially since they're only going 7 feet to the nearest chair and then back out the door again so sure, whatever.

Growing up, never taking shoes off was the norm and taking your shoes off in someone else's house would be seen as being very familiar.

I encourage my kids taking their shoes off and leaving them near the door so that they don't dump the sand in their shoes out randomly all over the house and so we can find them easily. Plus, lots of people do that as a norm so I want them to be used to it.
