Thank you, mickthinks. I agree that I have earned considerable trust by showing myself to be a reliable and reasonable interlocutor, one willing to admit error and qualify my claims appropriately when evidence demands. So I moreover agree that I am mostly clever by habit or disposition at this point, rather than in some attempt to earn something already substantially possessed.

You and me both, Prof. But I don't yet enjoy your privilege, and one of the reasons is that you and other similarly privileged folk here have an agenda to prevent that happening.
It's not how you arrive at privilege that matters, so much as whether you abuse it when you have it.

You and me both, Prof.
|
You and I both agree on this?
Or are you claiming to have demonstrated yourself to be a reasonable interlocutor? Because that is evidently (note: not self-evidently, but richly, empirically, longitudinally evidently) false.

Re: The impervious self-belief of the troll
You have exaggerated my assertion, Prof, but it would be a mistake to think that you have thereby refuted it. I guess for people who assume you are always reliable and reasonable, it's an easy mistake to make. I hope that isn't the effect you've calculated.

No, no, assertions are just assertions. Unless they are assertions noting Loss of Mickface, in which case they are attempts to claim privileged divine authority.
|
For the sake of completeness, I should point out that assertions noting the Loss of Mickface are also, sometimes, question begging arguments in and of themselves. It has been claimed that all assertions, in fact, are actually question begging arguments but, strangely, in practice this rule is only applied to assertions which would reflect negatively on mickthinks or his various crusades for internet justice and accountability.
I guess, given the apparent equivalence of assertions and arguments in mick's mind, it's understandable that he believes himself to have made some argument in the thread about Chuck's superior internet privilege vis a vis JEROME.

It certainly does cause confusion when you attempt to apply the phrase "question begging", a term of art that describes a specific sort of invalid argument, to things that are not arguments, yes.

Re: The impervious self-belief of the troll
It is remarkable how freely and frequently mickthinks makes unsupported, and largely unsupportable, assertions while completely lacking in either the authority or the privilege that he imagines to be a necessary prerequisite for making such assertions.
How does he do that?

"Unsupportable"? How do you propose to support that charge, mickthinks?

Re: The impervious self-belief of the troll
That charge will support itself as Angakuk, you, Adam, or whoever, fails to provide reasons and evidence that I've made frequent (I take that to mean more than just a few) largely unsupportable assertions, and that I imagine authority and privilege to be necessary to make assertions.

This is good! I will use it later. Like remember that time when people were all where is your evidence, mickthinks? and you were all "nah." I remember that!
For the time being, though, I will simply say that there is no need for evidence since it isn't in dispute.

And yet allusions to your own hypocrisy cannot be justified by the fact that you are and will continue to be hypocritical. Interesting!

It's the same support you just asserted as unproblematic, mickthinks. Are you capable of noticing this fact? I reckon you are, so it's interesting that you are managing not to.

Re: The impervious self-belief of the troll
You seem to be saying that an unsupported accusation of hypocrisy is support for Angakuk's unsupported accusations*. It isn't. It's just one micksux piled on top of another.
*that I make frequent unsupportable assertions and that I imagine yada yada

mickthinks, you seem to be saying that an unsupported charge of unsupportability is support for your accusations. It isn't. It's just denial stacked atop denial.
