The slow-motion* train wreck** that is Brexit continues its inevitable course.
* 52% of drivers were on strike
** The wrong kind of drones on the line

The deal, which May has spent most of 2 years negotiating and is about the only deal that could be made, has been put to a meaningful vote in Parliament and Parliament have meaningfully said :nope:. Not this, something else, we don't agree on what, just not this. So pretty much the same as the original Brexit referendum.

Theresa May loses Brexit deal vote by majority of 230 | Politics | The Guardian

That's a massive defeat for a government - "the heaviest parliamentary defeat of any British prime minister in the democratic era".

The Right Honourable Jeremy Corbyn, MP (Islington North) and Leader of the Opposition has tabled a motion of no confidence in the government.

(1) Brexit vote: Jeremy Corbyn tables vote of no confidence after May suffers historic defeat – Politics live | Politics | The Guardian (live updates, title may change)

May promised there would be such a vote. The MPs promised to vote against it. Corbyn promised to put forward the no confidence motion. So everyone is entirely honest and sticking to their word.

We are getting ever closer to finding out what a "no deal" Brexit will be like.

If our politicians were split on whether to walk up a river on its left or right bank, May's compromise would be that everyone would have to wade up the middle of the river: in her mind that would be the only logical solution.

I don't remember seeing that analogy used anywhere, so perhaps it's my own invention!

Oh hey, it gets better. Seems in some of the cases the UK was in favour of the regulations/laws but voted against for the sake of some other political maneuvering.

Britain would never ever vote against something it wants because of slick maneuvers, would it?

Yes, this is the real Brexit (not the anti-immigrant Brexit which is the populist angle to get the votes, and not the "better trade deals outside the EU" Brexit which no one really believes).

It's the conflict between people (the Eton elite) saying "Brussels stops Westminster doing what it wants, and Brussels is full of time-serving borderline-corrupt politicians who don't represent the interests of the average Briton" and people (sane people) saying "Brussels stops Westminster doing what it wants, and Westminster is full of time-serving borderline-corrupt politicians who don't represent the interests of the average Briton".

Dyson to move company HQ to Singapore | Technology | The Guardian

Dyson is the billionaire vacuum cleaner dude and outspoken Brexit supporter. Now's Exitbr-ing.

Quote:
In 2014, when Dyson promised £1.5bn of invesment in the UK, the then prime minister, David Cameron, described the company as a “great British success story”. There was no comment from Number 10 on Tuesday.
Quote:
Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said: ‘This is staggering hypocrisy for Brexit-backing businessman James Dyson. It is utterly unbelievable that the business face of Brexit is moving yet another part of his business out of the UK.

“James Dyson can say whatever he wants but he is ditching Britain. This can only be seen as a vote of no confidence in the idea of Brexit Britain.”

I work with a lot of vendors who have for years used London as their base of European operations. It is very convenient because it is English-speaking, the European Medicines Agency is right there, easy access to banking systems, etc.

The urgent rush to move operations elsewhere has been amazing. I work in a very highly regulated industry, so there are a lot of timelines and requirements to move things around, and it has generated a huge volume of paperwork to get things shifted out of the UK. Moving to Dublin seems pretty common. It is a pain in the ass for me because clients have to review and sign off on these kinds of things for some types of services.

I kind of wonder what percentage of UK GDP in the past year has been attributable to professional services relating to Brexit contingency planning and enterprises relocating opreations out of the UK. And once that is done, shit is gone, no reason to come back.

Does your friend have grounds for acquiring UK citizenship?

Of course it's possible even that won't make a huge difference. Citizens and non-citizens alike will all be queueing for hours and face unpredictable problems when the border controls fail due to loss of staff, classic British government IT quality, and diversion of funds to trying to keep something else going.

My friend relinquished UK citizenship decades ago, and cannot easily get it back at this point without the document saying it was necessary to give it up. Irish citizenship is easier with the whole grandfather rule thing.

And I wish you good fortune in the food riots to come.
