Hey, girl, why aren't you smiling?
I suspect if the author had told the guy the truth it would have shut him up pretty hard.

Yeah I think I would have vented my worry and fear onto that guy, not necessarily with the real truth, but something horrible and devastating to make him feel like the asshole he is..."I am grumpy because I just got a cancer diagnosis, motherfucker! Why are you such a stupid clod?" or something equally outrageous.

Re: Return to Gender 101
I'll admit, I wasn't very happy when Vox poached Todd VanDerWerff from the AV Club. But if they are going to let him branch out and write thing pieces like this, I may have to change my mind. It's Not Just Jennifer Lawrence: Women in Pop Culture are Under Attack.

Re: Return to Gender 101
The sheer arrogance of it is what amazes me -- the apparent belief by some that they're entitled to see a woman nude, whether she wants them to or not. That and the utter contempt for the woman that such an attitude implies: "You don't have the right to deny my desire to see you nude. All I care about is my selfish desires, not your privacy, not your dignity, and certainly not your own desires."
I mean, I think that JLaw is a beautiful young woman. If she wants to do a nude photo shoot and then make the photos publicly available, that's her business. And I'll freely admit that I wouldn't mind seeing those photos. At all.
But I find it hard to fathom the arrogance and entitlement of someone who thinks that it's acceptable to hack into a person's private account and then distribute personal photos that were never intended to be seen by anyone but that person's closest friends. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the people doing this sort of thing would be livid if anyone invaded their privacy in such a manner.

Just a thought: Is there a whole lot of difference between the attitude of "You have no right to deny my desire to see you nude" and the attitude of "You have no right to deny my desire to have sex with you"?

You should have children, especially daughters. With your attitude you would be a very supportive father for whatever your daughters wanted to do.

Re: Return to Gender 101
There was an article years ago when topless photos of Kate Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor, whatever that generation is calling itself, were circulated. The author made the point that these kind of people think that since they can see all sorts of breasts on the internet they have the right to see every woman's breasts. Or at least every woman they find attractive.
Hey, that gives me and idea. We should find out who these guys are and fill their computers with pictures of breasts they won't like, like obese women's and women with stretch marks from breast feeding and sagging ones. I wonder how they'd react.

Re: Return to Gender 101
There's also a power aspect to it (like so many douche things).
"You may be popular and I may be a loser, but I've seen you naked so I win." Seems to be a sentiment coming from the bro-dude pro-leak community. Basically another way to take women down a peg for being women and more popular than said loser bro.

That is absolutely the slippery slope of rape culture.
There's a fundamental entitlement to women's bodies that falls along a spectrum of recreational ogling all the way to rape, and it's scary how far along that spectrum you can go before you reach majority disapproval.
Almost nobody would argue that it's unacceptable to notice people you're attracted to. Acceptance starts decreasing as you go further along the spectrum, though, into obvious ogling, street harassments, pick up tactics, following and other stalking behaviors, coercion, peeping, and physical assault to varying degrees.
And non-consent isn't just normalized and tolerated, but it's actually very commonly fetishized, even in pretty mainstream media. You'll still get regular mainstream sources gleefully reporting celebrity 'nip slips' and 'crotch shots,' even from celebrities who have willingly posed or acted nude, so it's not only about seeing them naked. There used to be a very very popular subreddit called creepshots that consisted of covert photos of people, including upskirt and downshirt photos, and they had a solid rule that consensual shots were not allowed. Because they weren't getting their kicks from the nudity, but from the violation. (By people I mean women, of course.)
And once you get far along enough on the spectrum that you appreciate or even require non-consenting subjects for your sexual gratification, you're close enough to advocating sexual assualt that I assume you are also into that. I can't imagine what would cause someone to get that far along the spectrum but not think it's also OK to assault a woman who is incapacitated. I'm sure plenty of people wouldn't take that step out of fear of getting caught or just of actually interacting with a woman (even a passed out one), but I'm not seeing a bright line morally.
And ugh, this doesn't even get into the mind blowing hypocrisy of a lot of the creeps who are doing it getting all outraged at any perceived violation of their privacy.
The NSA is evil, and doxxing people on the internet is a huge no-no, but the guy actually breaking laws to violate women's privacy is a hero.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Since we're talking about rape culture again, might as well get to Cee Lo Green, who, after pleading no-contest to drugging a woman's drink after the prosecutors took rape off the table, took to twitter to claim that it isn't rape if the woman is unconscious.
After he got rightly slammed for it and deleted his twitter account, his publicists apparently gave him a good talking to, because he's back on twitter. Not only that, he's issued a non-apology that would make any philandering politician jealous.

Addressed by Colbert thusly:
Quote:
"I am with the Huffington Post," Colbert said. "I stand with the Huffington Post, which posted a searing Op-Ed shaming anyone who looked at or shared these photos. So do not -- and I mean this -- do not go look at these photos."
"You don't need to. Instead," Colbert said, "go look at all the side boob and nip-slips at HuffPost's actual 'SideBoob' page."

Re: Return to Gender 101
Like racism, it's ingrained in the culture: JFSAG, I googled "camel toe". The second thing that popped up (right after Wikipedia):
"Women in Sports: 50 Camel Toes".
Quote:
UPDATE: Camel toe is one of those evergreen concepts that’s good throughout the year. So no matter when you’re seeking out camel toe on the internet, there’s pretty much an unlimited supply. A couple of bonus pictures have been added to the gallery beneath this paragraph in order to reflect this embarrassment of camel toe riches. And it’s especially prevalent in the world of sports, where athletes of the female persuasion favor the kind of tight pants that are conducive to the ‘toe. Enjoy.
