Originally if was 14 years and could be renewed by the holder for an additional 14 years.

Allowing copyright to extend as it is today does two things, it places control of the culture into the hands of corporations and stifles creativity.

I actually agree with Jerome to an extent... I don't think that with long running series and such that 14 years with a 14 year extension makes the most sense, but I also don't think the Disney corporation should still have total control over something made 80 years ago whose creator is dead.

And I think fair use should be more lenient.

Or when she's blasting Stormtroopers in Empire, standing up to Vader or telling Grand Moff Tarkin to go blow himself in A New Hope.

They're a little on the old side, now.

Isn't the New Republic alive and well 30 years after the Battle of Endor?

Not that I'm terribly versed in the Expanded Universe.

They're all still charismatic and great actors...

I don't see how anyone in theater could be "too old"... especially when it is a sequel. Just center it around Han and Leia's kid. ;)

So is Bruce Willis, but I'm not holding my breath for a Die Hard 6.

So they're just there for a few token scenes?

Point of order, is there actually any bottom level of worthiness required for Star Wars nerds to rage?

The list of what can rage-out a Star Wars nerd is lengthy and no matter how many items are on the list it can never be considered exhaustive.

*Odd phrasing - I assume from reading your subsequent posts and references to the 14 + 14 scheme, you refer here to the federal Copyright Act of 1790, and not to prior legislation. The Statute of Anne is arguably more original.

My response to discovering this bit of news:

I happen to think that since Lucas already squandered his franchise creatively (if not fiscally), there isn't much Disney can do to make it worse. At the very least, it did inspire fan art of a Disneyfied Death Star.

On the plus side, Lucas is giving most of what Disney paid him to charity.

That pretty much eliminated all remaining reservations I have with this.

In case people needed more evidence of George Lucas being an actually pretty cool guy: this Cracked article.

The article makes a case for the timing being good according to "experts", and speculating on Lucas' motives, but clearly states "Lucas and a spokesman for LucasFilm were not immediately available for comment"

We have no idea if Lucas gave a single thought to the tax and estate issues

Also, giving it to charity would tend to negate the capital gains on assets "held more than a year"
Quote:
That Lucas struck a deal in 2012 may be no accident either, advisers say. Long-term capital gains tax from the sale of assets held more than one year are taxed at a rate of 15% for investors in the 25% income tax bracket or above (Lucas’s level), and zero for investors in the 10% or 15% bracket. Those rates are set to jump to 20% and 10%, respectively in January. “He probably wanted to take advantage of the lower rate on long-term capital gain while it’s certain,” says Bill Smith, managing director at CBIZ MHM, a national accounting and professional services provider.
