Farren, I am so in love with you right now!
My stepson at the time was a big Vanilla Ice fan. When I fired up my Queen tape, the kid started having a fit when Under Pressure began to play. I relished in his disappointed face as the song got fully under way.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
Let that be a lessen to the young man!
I'm not opposed to sampling other musicians in all cases. Guys like the Daft Punk really do some clever stuff with samples (I'm not really a fan but the artistry is evident). And my nephew, who's an extremely competent musician who plays and writes his own material, played me a track the other day he mixed together from a whole ton of different 80's advert jingles, that was just beautiful.
But what is really galling about stuff like that awful Vanilla Ice track is that the "artist" has added nothing or at least little enough to be trivial to the original sample or samples. The appeal of the original samples is just about the only hook in the piece.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
Cypress Hill used the intro to Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield for Hits From the Bong. That was pretty cool though. Especially because it was just the intro and used in a totally different way.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
I don't have many records by artists who do a lot of sampling,* but Beck's Odelay, as I recall, contains a pretty fastidious account of where he got what from who and where he put it.
* I have the records they get their samples from.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
I also have quite a few records from which samples are frequently derived.
I think that Beck had to put who he sampled from on his album because now each sample has to be paid for and is litigated quite diligently. I watched a movie about DJs and they were always looking for samples they in the public domain.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
I was reading an interview with somebody, the Chemical Bros. maybe, and they said their favorite record for sampling was this:
For some reason -- I think because a friend of my brother was reviewing records for a magazine and gave this and a bunch of other stuff to me -- I've owned this thing since I was about ten years old. Not sure I've ever even listened to it for more than a couple minutes. So maybe you've heard it on a Chemical Bros. project.

I watched this video about the Amen Break a while ago, and it's scary how often I've heard it since then, after never having noticed it before.
It's like the Wilhelm scream or something. Once you know what you're listening for, you realize it's everywhere.

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
Bumping this thread because I just finished watching the first season of HBO's Flight of the Conchords. Very funny show, I highly recommend it. They have an episode with three Bowie scenes (youtube bowie + conchords), and then their Bowie tribute, which I embed below for your enjoyment:

Re: David Bowie appreciation thread
I used to be a Bowie fan, then I got free tickets to his touring performance in April 2004.
Complete...utter...runny festering pigshit. What fucking incoherent, LOUD, annoying offal. He should have been locked up and provided icewater enemas regularly for that foisting that show on audiences. Not being into mindless adoration, my guest and I left early....very early.
Don't waste your money on any live performances. I'll stick to recordings, where I don't have to go out to the concourse to even discern the melodies (after turning off my hearing aid). Then, with all of the screaming asshole geezer fanboys and skanky wantedtobe groupies in the audience, it sealed my resolution to never again see another rock musician in concert (which I'd set aside because I'd been given two free tickets to Bowie's abomination of entertainment).

No...I lost myself in the late 70s and found myself again in the 80s. Granted, 1981 was one of the crappiest years in my life, but 1984 was the absolute best. Bowie should have gone into massage therapy, or sump pump service, and saved us all the disappointment.

Foisting unrecognizable dreck upon unsuspecting fans who've paid outrageous sums just to get in the door? That oughta be a crime.
Are you saying that musicians won't continue to write and perform unless they make obscene amounts of money on tours? Are they really musicians, then? Or, just talented money-grubbers?
For the price my friend paid for those Bowie tickets, his entire corpus could have been purchased and enjoyed at a decent place and at a decent volume. His show was 100% noise, without any music content.
Then, all the fawning assholes in the audience make the experience even worse. I went to see Stephen Stills do an "unplugged" concert and he walked out on the audience because so many were being absolute asshole jerks. This is a situation I've seen all too many times at concerts, it's just with the 'wall of sound' type musicians, the asshole behavior becomes part of the "ambiance", I guess.
I hope Phil Spector is convicted and hangs. It's the least he deserves for what he did to music.

It's kind of weird that now they make money touring and publish music to make a name for themselves, when it used to be the other way around not so long ago.

IIRC, it was a hung jury and they're prepping for the retrial.
