In order to facilitate matters, I thought I would explain what I am doing. Immediately after the end of this sentence, there is a 1 pixel by 1 pixel transparent .gif file hosted on webspace that I control. You have just passed it.

On this webspace, I also maintain a small script that logs each IP address requesting that image from the server. The script writes these IP addresses to a database from which I may easily extract a text file containing the IP addresses and other information about visitors. Every person who loads this page - whether they read this post or not - by doing so automatically downloads the transparent gif file that is silently embedded in this post by use of IMG tags, and provides my script with their IP address. Therefore, I have the IP address of each person loading this thread.

I just thought you'd like to know.

As long as you do not tamper with the IP addresses in your database, I think this is OK, according to the Geneva Convention.

In order to improve the efficiency of IP address mining, I have placed my 1x1 transparent .gif file in my signature, such that my script will remotely register the IP address of anyone with signatures enabled who loads any page containing one of my posts.

you do realize that getting your IP is pretty simple. You can get that through email, IMing, infected links ect.

oh and I am pretty sure that liv has a list of all IPs that are connecting to the forum. Any Website you click on gets your IP or can get it if they need it.

if they have your IP they can do all kinds of stuff tampering with your connection to other sites is the smallest thing you have to worry about it.
Its not really following you around the internet they can get in to your computer and see exactly what you are doing if they did it the right way. if you have personal information or data saved on your PC they would have access to that and all kinds of things if they wanted to just from having your IP addy.

I am not saying that everyone or every website that you connect to will get your IP for malicious purposes, most websites get a log of IPs to just see who is connecting and from were. Most forums get them for other things and it also makes it easier to ban people, unless the forum has 2 members that us the same IP. There are also ways to change your IP with every log in to prevent people from being able to get your IP.

Well, up to this point, over the last 10-12 years, I've had very little trouble on the Internet. It kind of makes you wonder though.
