I believe it's a parasite that eats the tongue of a fish, then hangs out there and snacks on what the fish eats.

Given how common a phenomenon is convergent evolution, you'd think so, but oddly enough, that isn't true. There are certainly examples of ecological niches that clearly exist, yet haven't been filled -- at least, not yet. For example, Australia has no animals that occupy the niche filled by woodpeckers (and some other birds that aren't woodpeckers, but have adopted a similar food-gathering strategy) on most other continents.
