Last night, I realized that the last time I bought kitchen towels was about 35 years ago.

I have maybe 15 of them, most of them from the kitchen towels I bought the one single time I have ever bought kitchen towels, plus a couple that I think I stole from my parents or something. So those ones are probably at least 50 years old.

Sometimes, Matlock will start using other things like microfiber cloths or cloth napkins or whatever as kitchen towels, and I'll be all UGH about it. But does it occur to me ever that I have literally only ever bought kitchen towels once in my entire life? No. Not until last night did that occur to me.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to do. Obviously, I could buy some kitchen towels, but I don't want to be hasty about making that decision. I could make it like some kind lifetime achievement. I mean, probably not, but I want to leave my options open for a day or two at least.

I'll let everyone know what I decide.

I have about 1000 kitchen towels and I ought to buy some more soon. But according to the interwebs American English kitchen towels are not the same as British ones.

Please do so.

Also if you take any actions without making a decision, which is fine. After all, the art of war is keeping everyone surprised - including yourself.

I'm trying to figure out the difference. You mean the flat cotton or linen ones vs. terrycloth? Mine are about half and half.

We call them "tea towels." You mean the things you use to dry dishes after washing up, right?

I don't know why 'tea', except I suppose it's a nice British thing: it differentiates them from hand towels, which we use to dry our hands, and bath towels or bathroom towels, which we don't use to dry our baths or bathrooms as the names suggest, but instead to dry our hands again, and other body parts too. Bath(room) towels are bigger than hand towels, but hand towels and tea towels are roughly the same area, usually. Tea towels are thinner, lighter, usually made of cotton, and often carry pictures, maps, charts, slogans or similar: even if they're not decorated like that then they're at least usually multicoloured - checks or stripes - a plain single-colour tea towel would be decidedly un-British.

Because 'tea' is an all purpose metonym in British English. Sandwich? Tea. Cake? Tea. A full meal? Also tea. Afternoon? Tea time. And, apparently, 'tea' also means either 'kitchen' or 'dish' as well.

Would you like tea? There is no way to know based solely on the information provided.

I have a large linen one with color illustrations of tourist destinations Sydney Australia. It's my favorite.

I can solve one tenth of your problem(s). Go to the CostCo and buy one big supply of their microfiber towels and/or one big supply of cotton towels. The cotton ones are neither soft nor supple but they are good for getting your scrub on - in so far as a cotton towel can scrub on things. The microfiber make for a fair general purpose warshing towel. My roommate prefers the cotton and I prefer the microfiber. I only learnt to use the microfibers from my parents. Honest, I'm pleased with it. It holds dish soap well, foams up nicely and rinses easily and can dry relatively quickly. (As a side plus, I like that I can achieve the perfect level of dampness for cleaning simple spills and general wiping of things.)

BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.

We don't dry dishes here, we rinse them and then our kitchens have designated drying cupboards for what you want to wash by hand or what is still wet after the dishwasher.

But thanks to English heritage, I still insist on having dozens of tea towels that I am desperate to find uses for. Covering fresh baked goods is good; as a regular hand towel also.

Also giggled at the thought of 20 kitchen towels being enough for a lifetime.

Which are naturally over the sink. In Britain sinks seem universally to be under a window (so that Mrs Housewife can look at the garden while working? Who knows) which makes adding such drying cupboards problematic. Even though they are brilliant.

Oh, I am giving tea towels to my sister for her wedding (if she ever actually sets a date). Ok, so I have painstakingly been embroidering them, but still, gives an idea of how important they can be.

I now feel obligated to show you my tea towels/kitchen towels. Also this Swedish dish cloth that I am using instead of a sponge or other things to wash dishes by hand.
