Re: Isolation diaries
Aside from my thermomedrama, many of my co-workers seem to have no real grasp of what is happening outside...like, you are planning an off-site meeting in May? You think these physicians are still going to attend any kind of meeting in mid-April? You think this research institution is going to prioritize your stupid preclinical work right now? It's not my place to tell them how to spend their money, but, folks, look around. You aren't going back to the office on March 30, no matter what the e-mail said.

Re: Isolation diaries
Day 1 of working from home. The first hour was spent messing with my phone so I could make calls without giving out my cell number.
One cat parked herself next to my laptop and stared at me for a half hour until I put her on the floor. Creepy thing.
I ate tons of crap all day - cookies, pretzels, Cadbury eggs, fried rice.
The store near me is still out of toilet paper, cheese, bread, and the expensive kinds of pasta (they still have the cheap stuff). Still haven't found a thermometer

Dear Diary - Evening 1 - cooked a chicken, planning for chicken salad tomorrow.
Also, realization that I can stay up late and sleep in! So far so good.

Re: Isolation diaries
I have this fantasy that America accidentally swings toward socialism because of this. People stop shopping recreationally and realize how much stuff is bullshit, ISPs temporarily eliminate data caps and demonstrating they aren't necessary and it's just a moneygrubbing tactic and also that internet is a utility, trialing universal basic income, and demonstrating how privatized medicine puts everyone at risk.
Maybe we'll learn to respect and compensate blue collar and retail workers better, and realize that a lot of other jobs are mostly just bullshit, and that the ultra-wealthy are the enemy of the people and need to be eliminated by instituting a wealth cap and taking any money beyond that to put toward programs for the common good.
And then later, maybe everyone will start to notice that actually, the economy is a polite fiction and we can stop pretending it's even a thing, but that won't be until like August or so probably, and I won't be there to see it because my temperature is 97.6 now.

Re: Isolation diaries
I've used a wide variety of home thermometers, including one we got recently that's supposed to be bleeding-edge tech. None of them have been worth a single shit. They all think we're partially-cooled cadavers, whether we have a fever or not. Yet all of the doctors' offices seem to have working thermometers. I just can't get one, I guess.

If nothing else this tells us what the government (federal and sometimes local, depending on their response), the corporations INCLUDING the privatized "non-profit" (I'm looking at you Catholic brand health care AKA Blue Cross and associates), and most of your bosses (What? You can't work at home on your computer, come in and have Carol from HR cough corona all over you) think of us.
We are interchangable and dirt.
What have you got to lose but your shackles?

Re: Isolation diaries
Spent a lot of time on the phone and redrafting, today. Had a good lamb stew (leftover from last night) for lunch. Mrs. S went to bed before dinner with a sore throat; I had some Nuttzo keto butter, a quarter-wheel of brie, and some chicken breakfast sausages for dinner. Daughter and I have watched the first 3/4 of tonight's "The Magicians"; now she has a call about the Peace Corps (20 years ago, she spent two years in The Gambia, and now the government is pulling out every single volunteer around the world).
So I'm watching last week's "Full Frontal" and trying to decide if I want to eat something else.

Re: Isolation diaries
I made the best batch of pretzels so far, and it's weird how much better even just basic homemade mustard is than store boughten.
Also I remembered that I had a bag of surgical masks I used to use for sanding wood, and I found them downstairs. The bag was dusty and they're old and clearly not sterile or anything, but better than nothing. I'm just operating on the assumption that I could have it at any time and not know it, so I'm going to wear one every time I have to interact with anyone outside the house. (It'd be nice if that were more normalized, like it currently is in Japan. So like you start sneezing or coughing but don't know if you're sick sick, you just wear a mask that day and it's NBD.)
And we have to take Flossy to the vet tomorrow. She'll be OK. It's a gum overgrowth that we know about, but it's getting worse and they're bleeding and she's feeling pretty bad, so we need to get it taken care of.

Re: Isolation diaries
Wear the masks, if nothing else they'll get people to stay the fuck away from you. Probably even the recommended 6 feet

Re: Isolation diaries
I am wondering if there is something going around that makes you feel like crap, but that doesn't raise your temperature? I have been feeling bad on and off for over a week now; chills and heat alternating, aches everywhere, wooziness, fatigue, heart palpitations, sore throat, but at no point has any thermometer agreed to give me more than 36,6°C, tops.

Re: Isolation diaries
that could be mild corona, or a cold. They're pretty similar.
also average human temperatures are not quite what we were lead to believe due to small sample size

Re: Isolation diaries
FYI it might make you feel better to get a fever, drink hot ginger tea, hot shower bundle up for the night. Heat makes your immune system respond faster, that's the point of a fever

Re: Isolation diaries
Since masks are unobtainium in the shops, you can make your own - which will be better than nothing. You need some elastic bands and toilet p... Oh! Never mind.

Day three (at the risk of boring people like the lemon):
I am drinking my pepsi max out of a wine glass. Not because I have run out of glasses, but because it feels more festive.

Re: Isolation diaries
Gots ma hair did. Barbers shop open ... somewhat lacking in other customers.
The chain coffee shop (Costa) was takeaway only, all the tables and chairs piled up, but all the independent cafés had seated customers.

Re: Isolation diaries
I went to the supermarket. As expected, all the long-life items shelves were bare; but also no eggs, milk (even fresh milk) and hardly any meat - what the hell is happening?

Yeah, the fresh stuff also puzzles me. I mean, there is only so much you can even freeze.

4:50 AM: woke up, decided I wan't going to be able to fall back asleep. Got up, checked the avocados: not quite ripe, yet. Homemade low-carb chocolate/salted caramel ice cream (4 eggs, 1 can TJ's coconut cream, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (or more, to taste), sugar-free salted caramel syrup, 1 TJ's can vodka (so that it freezes to a spoonable consistency. Mix in a blender, pour into individual lidded serving cups to freeze.). Soon to add protein and caffeine.

Sou switched to UHT oat milk for her coffees about a year ago. Went to Asda the other day to top up and all the UHT cow's milks were gone. Huge section just empty. But the UHT oat, soy and almond milks were well stocked. People have very little imagination, or maybe they are less afraid of going without milk then they are of trying something new, I don't know.
Anyway, if you want some UHT milk, I recommend the oat milk at Asda, it's creamy and only has a mild oat taste. Great on cereal, in coffee or in any recipe really. It's a bit weird if you just want a glass of milk, but still fine for me.
The Aldi one isn't as nice and is more runny. I wouldn't recommend it unless you can't get Asda's.

3 oz. of sandwich pepperoni slices, 1/3 bag TJ's kale, and coffee, to round out this breakfast of champions.
