I have only just discovered the Little Mersausage, and at the same time discovered that it's been vandalised.

As will be obvious immediately, it's a reinterpretation of the Little Mermaid statue in Denmark, except with a mer hot dog sausage, and instead of resting on a rock off the shoreline in Copenhagen it rested on a bun sculpture in a lake in Reykjavík.

Spoilerised to give you a moment to visualise it ...

Quote:
“Hafpulsan” ... takes its name from the combination of the Icelandic words for ‘mermaid’ (hafmeyja) and ‘hot dog’ (pulsa/pylsa)
Quote:
“It’s a hot dog that is sitting like a mermaid on a little bread roll out in the pond,” explained Steinunn. “It’s sitting tall and pleased with itself, but then it’s also a little mer-sausage in a pond, some kind of strange, handless creature that has no idea how powerful it is. It’s also a bit uncanny,” she continued.

Steinunn does, however, acknowledge some gender play in her sculpture. “It is both a mermaid, which is generally female, and also a penis, in that it’s pretty difficult to work with this sausage form without it turning into a penis. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” she said.

But mere months later ...

Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir ... seems unconcerned about the damage to her work. "I’m fine with it for me it is just part of putting artwork into public space,” she says.

Dogs Playing Poker

Quote:
Ever look at Cassius Marcellus Coolidge's seminal chef d'oeuvre Dogs Playing Poker and think, "this is okay, but wouldn't it be nice if I could see the painting with any of 6.6 quadrillion possible card combinations?" No? Too bad, buddy: because here it is. Select a painting at random, or enter a unique painting ID from 1 to 6,622,345,729,233,223,680.

A friend of mine once came to my house with his three or four year old daughter, and I had a picture of the dog poker thing. The girl saw it, stared at it intently for a moment, lips tight and frowning, then said, with increasing volume and umbrage, "Dogs don't use chairs. They don't play games. AND THEY POOP OUTSIDE."

(I don't know why I had that picture. Owning a display-worthy copy of Dogs Playing Poker is still on my bucket list, so it must have been on a card or some other type of ephemera.)

Ray Bethell flying three kites at once, to music. It's hard enough controlling one kite accurately, but Ray used to fly one with each hand, and a third tied to his belt.

Ray was actually profoundly deaf, so the music was added by Robert Holbrook who made the video.

Sadly, Ray died December 2018 - but we have this video to remember him by.

Painting found inside Italian gallery wall confirmed as a Gustav Klimt | World news | The Guardian

Quote:
A painting found hidden in an Italian gallery in December is an authentic Gustav Klimt piece stolen almost 23 years ago, experts have confirmed.

The Portrait of a Lady was one of the world’s most sought-after stolen artworks before it was found concealed in a wall of the Ricci Oddi modern art gallery, the same gallery from where it went missing in the northern city of Piacenza.
Quote:
The theft of Portrait of a Lady was discovered on the morning of 22 February 1997 but police believed it had been removed three days earlier. Investigators at the time suspected an inside job. The investigation was reopened in 2016 following the discovery of DNA traces of a thief on the painting’s abandoned frame.

Police believe the thieves used a fishing line to hook the masterpiece off the wall and haul it up through an open skylight to the roof of the gallery, where the frame was discarded.

The Klimt is considered particularly important because shortly before its disappearance an art student realised it had been painted over another work previously believed lost – a portrait of a young lady that had not been seen since 1912 – making it the only “double” Klimt known to the art world.
