You left out the funny parts that this was a gun safety class by a reserve officer who allegedly has gun training. The bullet was fired when checking to make sure it was clear before using it in a demonstration and the gun was either somehow put away with a round in the chamber or been loaded without his knowledge.
The funny part is where we think 'oh at least he didn't just assume it was unloaded and point it at a person or his head when pulling the trigger' is the level other gun safety advisers need to beat to be considered competent at their job... and it's risen slightly.
(A simple requirement of a chambered round indicator, something already developed, would have helped prevent this. A decocker system that isn't the trigger, would have as well.)
