Good gawds. Those cartoons are not only brain-numbingly stoopid (and therefor belong in this thread I suppose) but also eye-hurtingly ugly.
Oh, plus casually racist of course but we're used to that from lolberts...

Aren't Congressional staffers Federal employees and so their wages are based on the pay scale, which is in turn based on education and experience and time on job?
Aren't Congresspeople given a staff budget based on population of their state?
Seems to me that of the above are true, then the only flexibility any individual Senator has is to hire by the pay scale. So, if they hire a high paid CoS then they have to find some lower paid people to round out their staff. Now, if women in employ of the Federal government are in general paid less, all other factors being equal, then that's a problem for all of Congress to address (which they seem to be trying to do, maybe?) and is not a partisan issue.

Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
I'm not sure former Israeli prison guard Jonah Goldberg qualifies as a conservative, but I guess he wants to apply for the job of Conservative Saying Stupid Things. He went on record as saying young people are too stupid to vote (meaning they don't vote for the people he likes) and he wants to beat the socialism out of them (I guess he has a lot of experience with that as a prison guard).
Now someone has picked up the gauntlet:
Quote:
Right-wing pundit Jonah Goldberg claimed he was using a metaphor when he suggested we "beat the socialism out" of young people--but how funny are threats of violence? To progrssive comedian Jamie Kilstein, not very. That's why he started a Change.org petition to have a fair fight with Jonah.
Kilstein writes:
Quote:
Bullying and advocating violence against people who disagree with you is not brave. Stepping into the ring for a fair fight would be.
This is in no way intended as a threat, instead this is a challenge to participate in a regulated boxing match with rules agreeable to both parties, a referee, trainers and any safety gear.

I think that second cartoon AML posted may be intentionally stupid, like the political cartoons in The Onion.
I can't believe that someone would think there was a coherent and sensible message in there.

I dug around on the internets and as best I can tell Gilganixon, the Australian cartoonist, built it as a black and white cartoon first and posted it here as part of a kind of competition of digging out (and morphing, and searching for themes) in the best/worst political cartoons. Gilganixon then decided to add more stuff relating to themes from the thread, and displayed the completed color version here in the same thread on Something Awful.
-The lolhog is actually The Pigman from The Pigman Cometh, a really bad web comic. Summarized at Something Awful here.
-The phrase Obama is saying is actually taken directly from a cartoon by Glenn McCoy showing Obama beating a dumpster full of fetuses with a baseball bat behind an abortion clinic.
-The two characters speaking in the lower-right corner are copied from another cartoon by Chuck Asay:
Sorry, I couldn't find a decent link so displayed the cartoon instead. Back to the Gilganixon cartoon:
-Obama appears to be preparing to eat the dog, which is a response on the Right to the anecdote about Romney bringing the family dog along on vacation in a dog-carrier on top of the car. B-b-but when living in Indonesia as a child, Obama ate dogs!- which became a cartoon theme.
-The crying Lady Liberty in the car is an ongoing theme in political cartoons, and parodied by Kelly at The Onion here.
The Gilganixon cartoon is mostly funny because it is a mega-parody that incorporates numerous bat-shit crazy political cartoonists into one giant mash-up.
It is even funnier because AML identifies with it as serious political commentary.

Two of the most admired and important men in American history are King and Ali/Clay, both would not support the killing of brown people overseas.

You and I can agree that Obama's foreign policy is reprehensible. But the clip you showed wasn't about that. It was about an error in a speech. David Wong of the prestigious news organization Cracked.com lays it out here:
5 Ways to Spot a B.S. Political Story in Under 10 Seconds
Quote:
"Obama gaffe," "Romney gaffe," "Perry gaffe," "Biden gaffe" -- every party gets it equally. The word just means "embarrassing mistake," and I have literally never heard it used outside of the context of a meaningless, bullshit filler political news story. I'm not normally an angry man, but it's such an obnoxious word that if somebody at work used "gaffe" in a sentence I would fling my goddamned coffee into his face.
So for instance, during the health care reform debate, President Obama gave approximately 9 million speeches outlining how his plan supposedly would make the system more efficient. Then, in one speech, he stumbled, and instead of saying that the plan would rid the system of inefficiencies, he accidentally said it would bring inefficiencies. This slip of the tongue unleashed a torrent of headlines and blog posts and talk radio rants. On the other side, at a Mitt Romney campaign event, John McCain accidentally mixed up two words that implied Romney liked wasteful government earmarks. Boom! Gaffe!
These are completely information-free news events, and they absolutely dominate political news coverage and analysis. It's like asking your doctor if the X-rays show a tumor, and all he'll talk about is how stupid the radiologist's haircut looks.
You're probably asking why routine slips of the tongue continually become news headlines when they have absolutely no impact at all on the candidates' positions or platforms, or what they intend to do in office, or how capable they are of doing it, or anything else. Good fucking question! The answer is that many (if not most) people don't follow politics in order to find out who to vote for as part of their duty as citizens living in a democracy. They follow it purely as a form of entertainment. They're like sports fans, rooting for their "team" to win.
And as you're going to find out, virtually all political news coverage is written to appeal to those people. They're the most rabid "consumers" of news, and their traffic is the most reliable, so the news is tailored to appeal to them.
In the business, they derisively call it "horse race journalism," where the stories focus purely on the "sport" of politics rather than the consequences. A study found that in 1960, about half of the political news stories were about actual policy and the other half were these frivolous "who's winning the game" stories. Today, only 17 percent of stories are about stuff that matters.
|
This is why you and I can agree about portions of Obama foreign policy, but then when you start pulling up every bullshit pretend controversy and gaffe- and then sprinkle heavily with crackpot conspiracies and outright magical thinking- it waters down your credibility and makes you look more irrational.
|

You think offending Poland is a non-story. Good to know Obama has elevated American status all around the world.
Wait, didn't a ton of people vote for him because he was going to fix the damage Bush did to American status all around the world?

I think the actual killing of non-combat citizens has caused far more damage to our public image than a single sentence.
Nice priorities there buck-o.
