I was a little bit shocked when I saw that Havel had died. Not because I thought he had already died, but because it is hard to imagine him not being alive. I'm not sure why. It's not like he figures particularly large in my life. For me, has mainly been important as a dissident and intellectual in a historical sense, but he loomed so large in European human rights discourse and the postcommunist political arena that he was always there, even after he faded from public life.
Of course, he did back the US invasion of Iraq, thus invalidating any other praiseworthy qualities, so good riddance, I guess?
I was in Prague in 2007. We visited Wenceslas Square and the memorials there. A quick slideshow of the area; click "Show Info" in the upper right corner to get the descriptions of what you are seeing.
