I don't know if this helps or not. But when I need a more dark sleeping experience, I found that the sleeve of a t-shirt works as an impromptu sleep mask. But then I wear a 2xl shirt so tbe sleeves are p large. I don't know what size shirt you lilputians wear. It's not as tight or ocularly deforming as a sleep mask is.

But now that you've explained that it's mostly for long bus trips, you must get a mask. A V mask. Or a zombie mask. Or a a clown mask. The possibilities are endless.

Tape over the eye holes, of course, from the inside. Perhaps attach half ping-pong ball eyes on springs. (Since this is the make something thread.)

Put a sachet of something behind the mask's mouth and a tiny hole for the effect of occasional drool. Blood, in the case of the clown.

I think the Clown mask with the sprung Ping-Pong ball eyes is the best suggestion so far. Even if you can't sleep, for all the laughter, you'll be entertaining.

I have figured out how to make the easiest dog cookies.

This is a pretty big problem in our house because our dogs are severely cute and also very good, and also they steal our spots on the couch sometimes and need to be bribed, so they get a LOT of cookies. And dog cookies are weirdly expensive plus sometimes, they're way too big and you have to break them up into smaller pieces lest the dogs get really fat.

So here is how you can do.

You put a bunch of rolled oats in the food processor and pulse it until it's a flourlike consistency. Peel some cooked sweet potatoes (I microwave them), and add them to the oat flour. Add one or more eggs, depending. You're aiming for a fairly stiff, dry dough that's still cohesive. It doesn't need to rise or anything, so it's mostly just a texture thing. Then, you can add flavorings as needed. We have a batch I made with red garnet potatoes that I added a couple tablespoons of peanut butter to, and I just made a batch with purple sweet potatoes and a couple teaspoons of bacon fat.

Mix that all together until it's a consistent, workable texture, then roll it out into as close to a rectangle as you can get, put it on a parchment lined baking sheet, then score it with a knife or a pizza cutter or something. Because this isn't a fussy thing, I've actually been rolling them out straight on the baking sheet to limit the number of things I have to wash.

Then, put it in a 350F oven for let's say twenty minutes to half an hour, until it's almost a hard texture. Then turn the oven off and leave the cookies in there while it cools off. You can leave it in as long as you like. They'll just get crunchier.

Then, you just take them out, break them apart at the scores, and give dogs a thousand cookies every day.

Back when I was a mere sprat we always had a pan of oyster stuffing at Thanksgiving because Grandpa insisted on it. To my everlasting shame I have to admit that I never even gave it a try because it sounded just to awful and there many other good things available. Anyway, I have often wondered what it would have tasted like. So, today I made a pan of Oyster and Cornbread Dressing. It was, if I do say so myself, awesomely delicious. I don't know whether this is quite the same thing that we used to have at Thanksgiving, but I really don't much care. It was good and I will surely make it again sometime.

I think I must have forgotten to post this last month. So I will do it now.

I made a Bisquick hamburger and onion pie to take to club meeting. This is one of the recipes that my Grandmother taught me to make back in the day before I left home. I did make one mistake though. Since it had been so many years since I made it I looked up the recipe in a Bisquick cookbook. The recipe calls for mixing up and rolling a pie dough for the pie crust. Right after I had put all the ingedients into the mixing bowl I remembered that Grandma always used the Bisquick drop biscuit recipe for the crust instead of the pie crust recipe. The pie turned out just fine, but mixing and rolling out the pie dough was much more work than just pressing the biscuit dough into the pie pan. Still, the pie came out very good and tasted very much like the ones my Grandmother and Mother used to make. The recipe also called for "flavor extender". I didn't have any of that (I don't even know what that is - probably some MSG monstrosity) so I just added some Mrs. Dash Table Blend. It didn't seem to do any harm.

Yesterday I made the Oyster Dressing again for the club's Christmas Turkey dinner. This time I fiddled with the recipe a little. Instead of baking my own cornbread I combined a package of commercial cornbread stuffing mix and regular seasoned stuffing mix and I added a tablespoon of Worchestershire Sauce (my apologies to the poor little anchovies). Both times I left out the celery because celery is nasty stuff and serves no useful purpose other than as a vehicle for conveying peanut butter and/or cheeze whiz to one's mouth. After which one can throw away the celery as the stuff is not fit to eat. Anyway, back to the main story. The first batch I made I used Jiffy Corn Muffin mix to make the corn bread. Turns out this was too sweet for my taste. The corn stuffing mix and seasoned stuffing mix combination was much more to my taste.

I have some of the oyster dressing left so tomorrow I am going to fix oyster dressing and eggs for breakfast. Sort of a variation on corned beef hash and eggs, which is one of my favorite dishes for breakfast.

As loyal as I am to Jiffy, it's a Michigan company and really has no idea what cornbread should taste like to Southerners.

I can only listen to so many christmas songs and watch so many specials before I get the urge to do something industrial.

I made oogoo, just to see what I get. Silicone caullking can't be used in molds because the center never sets, but oogoo sets all the way through. It's also super easy and cheap: Just ordinary silicone caulking mixed 1:1 by volume with cornstartch. Opinions are mixed on why it works, but I think it's almost pure chemistry:
  • Consumer silicone sets by reacting with small amounts of airborne water and releasing acetic acid. This is why the center can't cure - acid can't leave and water can't arrive.
  • Cornstarch reacts with acetic acid to make bio-friendly plastic and small amounts of water.

I think mixing them together cuts out the middleman, the acetate jumps straight to the starch, making bioplastic and water, letting the silicone cure.

Results so far are encouraging. Like a pasty white hockey puck.

I made a plug to fill a hole in a decora style wall plate.

You might think this is not up to my usual standards with all my gear whatsits and widgets, but I think it's amazing: It worked the first try, even the screw holes. I'm not sure I've ever managed that with a 3d printed object before.

Last night we went out for supper, Feast of the Epiphany and all that. Mrs. A and I both had Iowa chops. I had steak fries and she had a baked potato. We also had a plate of onion rings as an appetizer. We didn't eat all of the meal and so took the leftovers home in carry-out containers.

This morning I used the leftover onion rings, chops and potatoes to make a Leftover Frittata. I added some sliced tomato & cojack cheese to the eggs. After it came out of the oven I added some sliced avocado and crumbled a little feta cheese over the top.

It were awesomely delicious, if I do say so myself.

I'm building an AC motor tester, which is pretty much a power cord with alligator clips. I already built a version of it but was afraid to try using it, even though it had a fuse and breaker. That just prevents fire. It really needs a GFCI to be even slightly safe, I think.

So here's a plate which fits a properly-grounded AC box and can fit one GFCI and one "other" which will be drilled out for switches and pushbuttons.

My Leftovers Frittata was such a success that I have gone ahead and experimented with some other Frittata variations.

This is what I made this morning.

Frittata Marinara

Potatoes, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, olives, minced garlic, and various spices (oregano, sage, rosemary, basil, tumeric, etc.) all sautéed in olive oil. 4 whipped eggs added and cooked on the stove top until firm on the bottom and at the edges. Marinara sauce (Ragu actually) spread on top and grated mozzarella sprinkled over that. Parsley flakes and paprika added for color. Baked in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes. Avocado quartered and added after it comes out of the oven and feta cheese crumbled on top. Sadly, I forgot to include the andouille sausage (I didn't have any Italian sausage on hand) so it turned out to be a vegetarian frittata, not what I intended but good nevertheless.

Frittata Marinara 3.0.jpg

This is my Frittata Marinara 3.0. I added the tomatoes, sour cream, avocado and feta cheese after removing the pan from the oven. I needed the tomatoes cold so the sour cream wouldn't melt and I wanted the sour cream for a little bit of color contrast. Also to hold the avocado in place on the tomato. I didn't forget any ingredients this time, so this is the real finished product.

Frittata Marinara 3.0 plated.jpg

This is what a single serving looked like once it was plated. Notice the garlic toast and grapefruit. It looks like a lot of food on the plate for just one serving, but it is only two eggs, half of a medium potato, half of a bell pepper, an eighth of an onion. one sausage link, one mushroom, half of a tomato, half of an avocado, two dollops of sour cream, a handful of feta, one slice of garlic toast and a half of a grapefruit. Not really all that much when you think about it and reasonably healthy, all things considered.

I made a Frittata Chorizo 2.0 for breakfast this morning. I know it looks a lot like the Frittata Marinara 3.0, but it is completely different. By completely different I mean that I replaced the andouille sausage with chorizo, the mozzarella with manchego, the feta cheese with queso fresco, the avocado quarters with guacamole and the Italian seasonings with a little chili powder. I also added some bacon as a garnish. The rest of the ingredients (i.e. potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, onion, olives, mushrooms, bell peppers, sour cream, etc.) are the same. Why, you ask, did you include bacon? Because bacon makes everything better. Duh! I suppose that you are also wondering what happened to version 1.0. Although it tasted just fine I wasn't satisfied with how it looked so I am not posting a picture of it.

Here it is in the pan.
Frittata Chorizo 2.0.jpg

And here it is plated and ready to eat.

Made a tiny DC motor controller over the weekend and since a 3d printer was handy decided to give it a real case instead of half-assing it.

Only drilled two superfluous holes, which is way above par for things I make. :shiftier: (edit: or is that below par. Less holes than usual. Whatever.)

Switches are power and direction, the dial at the top is speed. The case neatly fits one of these old-fashioned tiny Radio Shack protoboards which they sold by the dozen but never stocked a case for:

To start with I couldn't get my head around the 3D trigonometry needed to define the wacky profile the rollers must have so that the wheel can roll along normally without joggling. But after playing with OpenScad for a few hours it all started to make sense. Now I need to design the hub that carries all the rollers and attaches to the main drive axle...
