Re: Miscellany
I got into an argument with a friend recently over something similar. We were looking at a school group photograph that I was in and he asked where I was.
I said, "that's me, second from the left on the back row."
Then we got into a long argument about what that meant - did it refer to position two along the row or position three? I always thought it meant position three but he argued that it meant position two.
My reasoning is that position one is "on the left of the back row" and position two is "first from the left" and so on.
But he maintained that no one would ever say, "first from the left" for position two and that the correct term for position two is "second from the left."
Because I suspect that other people may be equally as deluded as my friend, I resolved never to use the term again and instead would either point at the position or say something like, "On the back row, counting from our left, I'm at position three."
ETA: while I've been writing this, I've realized that it makes a difference to me whether I say, "second from the left" or "second on the left". So perhaps I can't blame others for using the terms differently to the way I understand them.

I was indeed. I need to have a calendar handy at all times, I suppose.

Things I should have assumed: of course SF has a group called the Golden Gate Knights that dress up as Jedi and practice a form of tai-chi, wooshu and dance while fighting with LED lit stage combat blades.

I don't like when he does voices or when he starts getting too blunt with the winky "isn't this WEIRD?" stuff, if that makes sense. It's like too 'wacky comedy' or something for my likings.
I really, really like it when he does play it straight, though, and just sounds like a radio DJ reporting things that are normal to him.
The first episode or two are pretty good for staying straight the way I like it, but then--and I've maybe only listened to seven episodes or so--it just gets too much with the play acting and stuff, so I just kind of stopped listening both times I started.
But then I'm wondering if that's permanent or if it goes back to being the way I like it, and I barely even know how to ask this question, so I don't know how to look it up. Does anyone listen to this and understand what I'm asking?
|
Yes! We now listen to this. I got introduced to it last week sometime and we listened to a bunch of it this weekend.
The first couple of episodes are so good I was hooked immediately. I've listened to them a couple times now, once when I was getting introduced and then I started at the beginning again when I showed it to bey. I can't say whether I noticed that it gets played less straight later, but what I did notice is it started to feel less "out there" and/or totally surreal later on. I just chalked that up to getting used to the format and getting to know the major players. I did think that kind of took the fun out of it, but maybe that's not exactly what happened. Who knows?!

La Gazza Ladra! A restaurant we used to go to a lot when I was a kid had a pet magpie. I don't recall her looking so grumpy, though, prolly because the customers fed her treats all the time. She talked, too.

Re: Miscellany
I don't know where we talked about it before, but TCM and Criterion have named their joint streaming service Filmstruck and I'm a beta tester! They don't have many movies on yet, but they chose well for the sample. A ton of Kurosawa, some older American films, some cult and some other foreign. I like the interface so far, but haven't watched anything yet as I only signed up last night. I will definitely be signing up as soon as it becomes available.

TWINS!
It doesn't have a huge catalog right now, but the curating seems pretty good. I've really been looking forward to this, so I'm optimistic.
I'm not sure just how much and what sort of input they're looking for, though. Like, should I be complaining about the UIs or the selection or what?

I couldn't remember if it had been in the TCM thread or one of the streaming ones. When in doubt, post in Miscellany. That's my motto.

Apparently, it was me, and I always try to resurrect the " Watching TV on the Gaming Console" thread whenever I can, because if you don't look at the dates on the posts, we all look kind of weird and stupid.
So I think the real problem here, livius drusus, is that you are either ignoring me or the "Watching TV on the Gaming Console" thread. It doesn't matter which. They're both inexcusable.
