Clutch's point was that as well, the constraints are not imposed from outside sources, they are choices made by the individual. Are you purposefully misrepresenting his argument?

lol Clutch has a nice argument about free will in his portfolio which he seems determined to shoehorn in wherever, but which misses the point entirely. Ethical behaviour begins when we accept that our moral values impose constraints on us that arise from circumstances outside us. Ultimately we may well be free to choose not to have any moral values, of course. But is that what you have chosen?

The question is, are our moral values freely chosen? If they are, then any constraints they may impose on our behavior are the results of our own previous choices. Additionally, each new situation confronts us with the necessity of choosing whether or not to act according to those freely chosen moral values. Again, freely chosen moral values are not necessarily immutable and thus may be subject to revision.

Really? We chose this stuff? I mean, of course we choose a bunch of it. I spent over a decade working to become the sort of person that I would not be ashamed of later in life.

But in all the choices I made, I was still aware that sometimes I did stuff that made me feel guilty for reasons I did not always understand at the time. There must be something there that is either innate or imposed, right?

I suppose it could just be me. Perhaps most people never experience feeling guilty without understanding why. I have, is all.
