A ferocious rainstorm swept through the campus earlier today. How ferocious? Well, the campus creek flooded and ran freely over the main road for some time. After the rain stopped and the creek went down a bit, several students and I spent an hour or so walking up and down the campus' main road, picking up crayfish and fish, and tossing them back into the creek raging torrent. (Most of the fish were dead by the time we found them, alas -- many of them apparently killed by blunt force trauma from being slammed into rocks -- but we rescued quite a few and returned them to the creek.)

You know it's a serious rainstorm when there are literally fish swimming down Main Street. I was reminded of a time when I got caught in a tremendous rainstorm while hiking in the backwoods of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At one point, I had to watch my step, for fear of accidentally stepping on the crayfish which were swimming along the hiking trail.

I don't typically read the by line on AV Club newswire articles, but when I read something that makes me think, "I'll bet Sean O'Neal wrote this," I'm usually right.

In this case, it was the phrase, "and when it was all said and dodged, everyone really came away having learned a lot about whatever they already thought going into it."
