You know the worst thing about that site for me, personally?

Guys with that attitude and mindset towards women were like 85% of my potential dating pool when I was a young woman. Even guys I respect and like have some of those "deal breakers." The homophobic, racist, and christian values guys are another subset of about 70%. The overlap between them left about 2% of guys that weren't toxic and that was before I got the privilege of being superficial about their appearance.

When I was young, I was all pretty and skinny and white and stuff, so often, I would end up dating guys like that. Like, I wouldn't have any idea until they let some gross racism or sexism or whatever slip. So when I was somewhere in my 20s, I stopped even considering any dating offers or anything. I realized I didn't need to be messing around with the kind of dudes who approached me. So I just picked out the men I liked and told them to be my boyfriends from then on, and was largely able to avoid that sort of thing that way.

And now, here is the thing. Now that I'm getting old, I've noticed that men, especially young men, treat me as though I'm an inconvenience or an affront to their sensibilities much more often. Like just today, Matlock and I went to lunch, and he started to sit at a table, and I told him I wanted to sit at a booth instead, and there was this table of motorcycle cops there, and they turned around and gave me the stinkeye like UGH BACK-TALKER. (When they left, I didn't even do this on purpose, but I said, "Oh, good, the po are leaving!" a little too loud.)

I know a lot of women who take that sort of thing really hard because there's a) the realization that people only paid attention to you when they wanted to fuck you, and b) people no longer want to fuck you. I'm personally a little surprised, though, at how little that bothers me. When someone is treating me like that, my immediate impulse is to ANNOY THEM EVEN MORE. I actually enjoy it. There's one clerk at our grocery store who is a super-virulent misogynist. First, you can tell because he is really nasty, but also, TLM knows him and told me that he vents about stupid annoying women at the end of pretty much every shift.

So I pick his line whenever I can, and try to push as many buttons as possible, sometimes even using insider information I got offa TLM. I'll make a point of chattering THE ENTIRE TIME because I know it really bugs him and he has to take it. (Weirdly, I thought the guy was about 40, but he's 22. LOL.)

Because, like, you can swipe your card before the guy is even done scanning, so why just stand there waiting? Why not at least begin the hours-long process of fishing out a billfold and a credit card a little bit in advance? That is how the transaction ends - with payment. Why do we have to wait until the last possible moment?

Not at the two main grocery stores I go to. If you swipe too soon, you have to re-swipe. In fact, one of the ways I misander that guy is to swipe my card before he's done scanning.

Young men are the absolute worst because they haven't had any time to evolve or be called on their crap. They have stupid ideas in their stupid heads and they hide that shit so it jumps out later like a jack in the stupid. Here in Texas, I was probably being charitable with 2% being datable.

As I got older/less svelte I did have issues with not feeling desired by people all the time. I mostly felt invisible. There were times when I felt it was very difficult to be noticed or heard. That was really freaking hard. Because when I was a sweet young thing, people would hang on my every word and suddenly I was all HEY AM I TALKING TO MYSELF? HELLO?

My whole life I was kinda more of a conformer in terms of my appearance, mostly out of laziness and genetic privilege. This last year I have seen a huge difference in how people perceive me based on the changes I have made. Like chopping my hair off, which is somehow a giant statement for a woman in Texas. Or rocking the arm pit kitties and leg hair and not giving a fuck, which totally makes me stand out.

One of the weirdest is my broken glasses. My goddaughter broke one of the ear pieces off this spring and I have been wearing them anyways. Most people don't notice, unless they go crooked, but those who do are like "Holy crap! How can you do that? You must have hella confidence so I will treat you as though you deserve consideration." I have actually gotten compliments for it. And it is funny, because even if people disprove of any of the above, at least I am no longer invisible and I have their attention for what I have to say. It's freaky man.

So I up the ante by dyeing my hair purple and am kinda reveling in it now. I know it is superficial and the Gaze and everything, but we live in a shallow society and what works works. At least this attention is the non-fuckable kind and once I have it they are hanging on my every word again because I am fucking fascinating.

I'm pretty sure that those stupid POS () credit card swipers were designed by some woman with misandry in mind, because OMG WHY CAN'T I JUST SWIPE MY CARD NOW? So I'm in the grocery store, and it's super busy because of some stupid football game or something. I get a bunch of groceries, and then go to the self checkout that doesn't have an item limit. And I am just finishing up the order (quickly and efficiently, I might add), and am grabbing my receipt and putting my bags in the cart, and Chuck rolls up directly behind me and starts trying to scan his shit WHILE ALL MY STUFF IS STILL THERE. So obvs, the machine is yelling at him, and he's all like "Hurrr, durr" and starts scanning his shit again and the machine yells again (my WTF moment did add a little time to the process), and I look over, AND THE ONE NEXT TO ME IS TOTALLY EMPTY. But noooo, he can't use that one because he wanted to be a dumbass instead.
