And back to the plug in cars.

Deployment Miracle Puts Electric Vehicles On Track To Save Livable Climate | ThinkProgress

I saw a Tesla yesterday parked behind a medical facility. Anyway, here is the typical applied experience/economy of scale curve.

One sort of fortunate byproduct of electric cars may turn out to be their used up batteries. The idea is that while their packs may be lacking in the punch you want for galavanting about town, they will serve just fine for the task of storage of reserve power from renewables.

U.S. Energy Shakeup Continues as Solar Capacity Triples | Climate Central

Quote:
Renewables still make up only a fraction of the U.S. power supply — 8 percent this year. That’s expected to grow to 9 percent next year, and the biggest driver of that growth is solar.
I remember when solar was a fraction of one percent of the power supply. Renewable then was almost all hydro with maybe one percent of wind. The fact that solar's going to add a whole percent is super significant to my alt-E crazed brainz.

Quote:
Solar power has been on a tear in recent years partly because of cheaper solar panels and a federal tax credit for solar installations. Congress extended the solar tax credit early this year, helping to fuel a 39 percent annual growth rate for solar power-producing capacity, to 27 gigawatts by next year from about 10 gigawatts in 2014, or enough to power about 3.5 million homes, the data show.

“Because of pent-up demand due to uncertainty over the federal tax credit, solar had a record year in 2016,” said Doug Vine, senior energy fellow at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. “Solar capacity buildout is expected to be similar next year.”
WUT? Somebody extended the tax credit? Who? CONGRESS? YOU MUST BE SHITTING ME!!!! The Republican congress what don't believes in that global warming shit? Get outta here. I can only guess the constituents asked for it. I mean, how big can the solar lobby be?

Vanadium flow redox batteries might be good for storing intermittent renewable sources (wind, solar). Vanadium is fairly plentiful, though it is toxic. A redox flow stores charge in two liquids separated by a membrane. The cool thing is that the vanadium solution would be in both parts of the battery, as vanadium can carry extra electrons or be short a few electrons.

And of course a youtube visualization.

I'm impressed that Sumitomo is in on the project. I'm familiar with their helium compressor used in superconductor cryogenics.

This perovskite substrate is a radical departure from silicon solar cells. It's caught up to the max efficiency of silicon based cells in a short period of time and is reportedly easier and less energy intensive to manufacture. The only hitch I've come across are stability issues, which might lead to an early wear out date, but they don't seem insurmountable or even that difficult from what I can understand of it. They're already largely solved if I'm what I'm reading is what I think I'm reading. These will reportedly be commercially available as early as next year.

Solar cells made from an inexpensive and increasingly popular material called perovskite can more efficiently turn sunlight into electricity using a new technique to sandwich two types of perovskite into a single photovoltaic cell.

Wind Briefly Sets Record as Source for Electricity in U.S. | Climate Central

Quote:
Wind briefly powered more than 50 percent of electric demand on Feb. 12, the 14-state Southwest Power Pool (SPP) said, for the first time on any North American power grid.

SPP coordinates the flow of electricity on the high voltage power lines from Montana and North Dakota to New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana.
An early milestone.

Denmark Generated Enough Wind Energy To Power All Its Electricity Needs On Wednesday | CleanTechnica
Quote:
According to WindEurope, Denmark generated a total of 70 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from onshore wind and another 27 GWh from offshore wind — enough to power the equivalent of 10 million average EU households.
That's 2.9 and 1.1 gigawatts, with a sum of 4.0 GW.

Denmark's capacity is 3.8 GW onshore and 1.3 GW offshore, adding up to 5.1 GW.

Will Autocracies Fall As The Oil Age Ends? | CleanTechnica
Quote:
The connection between reliance on a fossil fuel economy and corruption is well documented as the Resource Curse. Of all the petro-states, many have autocratic rule. Only Norway has consistently managed its oil wealth while remaining democratic.

Russia, the world’s largest oil producer, devolved from near democracy after the fall of the Soviet Union, into one of the world’s most corrupt kleptocracies under the 16-year rule of ex-KGB officer Vladimir Putin.
So Saudi Arabia no longer has that honor? SA is a textbook example of the Resource Curse.

A Slow-Moving GOP Coup in the US Predated Trump

US Intelligence agencies concluded Putin used sophisticated troll armies to fool Americans into installing a US puppet president supportive of Putin’s kleptocratic regime.

But well before the shocking election results, the contrast in small “d” democracy between the red states and the blue states reflected the level of each state’s dependence on a fossil-fuel. If the US comprised different nations, like the EU, the difference in democratic voting laws between Oregon and Oklahoma would be as stark as the difference between democracy in Sweden and dictatorship in Hungary.

By the same token, it's not as if all coal, nuclear or gas plants are running full bore round the clock either.

You are confusing output with capacity.

The Amonix Solar: FAIL! – manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, subsidized by more than $20 million in federal tax credits and grants given by Obama Administration, has closed its 214,000 square foot facility a year after it opened.

Solar Trust of America: FAIL! – Filed Bankruptcy in Oakland, CA, April 3, 2012

Bright Source: FAIL! – Bright Source warned Obama’s Energy Department officials in March 2011 that delays in approving a $1.6 billion U.S. loan guarantee would embarrass the White House and force the solar-energy company to close. Bright Source lost billions of dollars but is getting more money to keep trying. Can you say, “This isn’t working Mr. President?”

Solyndra: FAIL! – Obama gave $500,000,000 (that’s a HALF BILLION!) in taxpayer money to Solyndra who shut its doors and laid off 1100 workers in August 2011 after billions in losses due to failure to make a solar product that works! Barack Obama was not vetted before being elected President and neither was Solyndra before Mr. Obama threw that taxpayer money down the drain of unproven technology.

LSP Energy: FAIL! – LSPEnergy LP filed bankruptcy protection and a sale of its assets in Feb 2012

Energy Conversion Devices: FAIL! – On February 14, 2012 Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy

Abound Solar: FAIL! – Abound Solar received a $400 million loan guarantee from Barack Obama then announced in June, 2012 that it would file for bankruptcy. Many of these failed corporations, such as Abound, donated MILLIONS and continue to donate to Barack Obama’s campaign. Can you say, “Democrat Slush Fund”? Yes this is illegal. But Democrats are being protected from being prosecuted, for now.

SunPower: FAIL! – SunPower stopped producing solar cells in 2011 at near bankruptcy then restructured with the help of, get this, oil giant TOTAL, Inc. who owns 60% stake in SunPower. Irony? The company is still struggling.

Beacon Power: FAIL! – Beacon Power Corp filed for bankruptcy protection in October, 2011 just a year after Obama approved a $43 million Government loan guarantee. They remain barely in business, still struggling to make energy that makes sense or that works at all.

Ecotality: FAIL! – ECOtality, a San Francisco green-tech company that never earned any money and remains on the verge of bankruptcy after receiving roughly $115 million in two loan guarantees from President Obama, who wants to do some more of this kind of Democrat Slush Fund Guarantees after he is elected to a 2nd term.

A123 Solar: FAIL! – A123 Solar received $279 million from taxpayers thanks to President Obama’s Department of Energy loan guarantees even after the Solyndra bankruptcy and is getting another $500M from Obama after a loss of $400M.

UniSolar: FAIL! – Uni-Solar filed for Ch 11 bankruptcy in June 20, 2012 after laying off hundreds of workers. UniSolar received even more Obama money after showing now progress, no profits and is still failing… yet they still remain in business with Obama’s help.

Azure Dynamics: FAIL! – Azure Dynamics filed for bankruptcy in June , 2012 wasting millions in Obama “Stimulus” money and received abatement on taxes owed and and several tax credits. Azure Dynamics LLC filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the US. Azure laid off 120 of its 160 employees in Oak Park; Boston; Vancouver, British Columbia; and the UK.

Evergreen Solar: FAIL! – Evergreen Solar received $527 Million in Taxpayer money from Obama and filed bankruptcy in late 2011. Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March, 2011 cut more than 1800 jobs. Evergreen’s $450 million factory, turned out to be a colossal “waste” of taxpayer money.

Ener1: FAIL! Ener1 Inc. received a $118 million U.S. Energy Department grant from President Obama to make electric-car batteries but filed for bankruptcy protection January 2012 after defaulting on bond debt.

So I asked back to the engineer who posted me that in the first place with this:

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - Capacity
And he wrote back:

Quote:
The number being referred to in the cartoon is "Capacity Factor", the ratio of average output to rated capacity in percent. It's not correct to think of this as "percent of the time the plant is running", because power plants are not light switches - either fully on or off. Customer demand varies by time of day and season, and therefore plants operate somewhere between fully on and shut down to meet that demand.

Rated capacity is universally used in electrical design, from things you plug in at home up to power plants, because invariably they are connected to wires which must have matching capacity, else you cause overloads. So a wind or solar farm is rated in terms of the best output it can supply to the grid, even though conditions often produce less than that.

Recent utility capacity factors are reported for utility-scale Fossil Fuel and Non-fossil energy sources. They are all over the place. They also vary by season, and operating cost. Fossil fuels have a fuel cost when operating, other sources have minimal or no fuel cost. Total annual & monthly output by type for all major sources, and details for renewables are also reported. These reports are part of the EIA Electric Power Monthly, which supplies more than you could possibly want to know on the subject.

The problem which every utility has to solve is meeting all customer demands minute to minute, at the lowest total cost, without overloading transmission lines, and with enough reserve capacity to meet unexpected problems. That's not as simple as "higher capacity factor is better".
For those interested.

UAE Sees $192 Billion Savings in Switch to Green Power From Gas

Quote:
The Gulf state plans to invest $150 billion in renewable power to 2050, weening the country from dependency on subsidized natural gas power in stages, Minister of Energy Suhail Al-Mazrouei said at a conference in Berlin. Clean energy sources will help it save $192 billion, he said.

The UAE leadership is “bullish” about achieving the goal after realizing that the nation can forgo subsidies in the switch to clean power from LNG, Al-Mazrouei said. Sticking to the strategy will “save the environment and at the same time save us lots of money,” he said.
This at the same time as provinces of southwestern Dumbfuckistan continue to insist that sunshine is a lie.
