Americans United for Separation of Church and State has a nice response to Fischer's assholery.

My favorite reaction on the religious stuff was on a friend's Twitter.

I posted this status on fb and it's gotten twenty likes so far, so I might as well post it here too :cookiemonster: It repeats some stuff I've already said here but expands on many of the points in a bit more detail, so it's probably useful.

Quote:
1. Many members of the human race are shit. Today's events make it plain that you should make it clear to the people who actually deserve your affection that they have it. I wish I were any good at doing this.

2. Banning guns will not eliminate gun crime. It will just drive the gun market underground, where it cannot be controlled and will be in the hands of criminals.

3. However, sensible gun control policies have been shown in multiple academic studies to correlate strongly with reductions in gun violence. This does not mean banning all guns. It means enacting background checks for purchasing weapons, and it means providing those who buy guns with mandatory training.

4. More important than the gun debate, and likely to get buried under the noise created by the yelping dopes that dominate both sides of it, is the fact that our mental health care system is atrocious. People with mental illnesses are not actually more likely to commit crimes; they are in fact less likely to commit crimes and more likely to be the victims of them than the average person. On the other hand, there is more to mental health care than simply caring for people with mental illnesses. Mentally well-adjusted people do not go into schools and start shooting indiscriminately, and if everyone in this country got the treatment they needed, incidents like this would be a lot less common.

5. Fuck everyone.

Did I cover all the bases? I hope I covered all the bases.

Meanwhile, in response to the already-beginning "war on weirdos" alluded to above, one of my friends had this to say, which I think is just perfect:

Quote:
Let's begin the war on 'weirdos' again!

Quote:
Lanza’s strange behavior was well-known among his well-heeled neighbors in leafy Newtown, Conn. His antics irked several residents.

“Adam Lanza has been a weird kid since we were 5 years old,” a neighbor and former classmate named Tim Dalton wrote on Twitter. “As horrible as this was, I can't say I am surprised . . . Burn in hell, Adam.”

He was also seen as an odd figure at Newtown High School.

Even before that, Lanza walked the halls of his middle school carrying a black briefcase while most students lugged their belongings in backpacks. “That stuck out,” said Tim Lalli, 20, who graduated with Lanza in 2010. “It was different.”

Lalli said Lanza wasn’t a total outcast, but he didn’t speak much.

“Everyone just assumed he was a smart kid and that’s why he didn’t like talking to people all the time,” he said. “He hung out with the smart crowd.”
Smart? Odd? Not sociable?

It seems like more of the ppl I follow on Twitter than usual are calling for gun control in the wake of this. Notably, even distinguished lolbertarian Michael Shermer. (Who I'm still following despite his recent stupidity on sexism.)

What would gun control even do?
From what I understand these are legally purchased target practice weapons.

Step #1, Are they Muslim? Go to Step 3
Step #2, Is there something strange about them?
Step #3 Blame it!

Victims of Sandy Hook school shooting are named - latimes.com

My son is in first grade and was born in 06 like most of these kids. OMG those poor people. Parents, the kids who witnessed it, the teachers and employees of the school (who seem to have all acted incredibly bravely to save the kids) . I get sick even thinking about it.

TURN OFF THE NEWS.......

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."
That's not to say I agree with the whole blame the media thing, that's like ignoring cause and effect, however it's a very valid point in terms of how they react to tragedy.

In my opinion this is a reflection on mental health in this country.

It's not just Morgan Freeman. Criminal profilers have said this forever. They've said that the only thing the media accomplishes by plastering the news with 24 hour coverage of speculation and public discussion of mass killers is to encourage copycats. They make them into some sort of folk heroes for other whiny disaffected kids.

I don't entirely blame people for being transfixed by events like that and wanting to learn more about it for whatever reason, but I do 100% blame the media for continuing to cover these stories the way they do after having been told flat out that they're causing more killings.

So at least in part, the media is to blame. If the media didn't make mass murderers into celebrities, most of them probably wouldn't bother.

That's probably true, but not turning mass murderers into celebrities would require that the media has a soul. It's like that Don Henley song, Dirty Laundry.

Wasn't Natural Born Killers made eighteen years ago?

We have been arguing this since Herostratus. They made the mention of his name a crime punishable by death in order to prevent copycats, and here we are today and we still remember the lunatic who tried to take a now forgotten goddess with him into his disreputable grave.

The pointlessness of it all!

"This is Victoria Soto, and although I didn't know her, she is my hero. I don't know too much about her,.... Victoria was a Stratford high graduate and only 27. She was killed today after she hid her first graders in closets and cabinets and told the shooter they were in the gym. He killed her and not one of her children were harmed."

From KOS

Snopes is reporting this as a confused story, plenty of news agencies are reporting this and their appears to be an interview with someone quoted saying this, in either case, she was a teacher who was gunned down at work.

I know this has not been linked yet, an interesting article about the history of understanding mental illness and what we know doesn't work. That which doesn't work appears to be what every yahoo in every comments section is recommending, by the bye.

After Sandy Hook: Why mental illness matters

Also for Lady, this is what I'm dealing with, a child who doesn't know and isn't concerned.

The Westboro Baptist Church is planning on protesting the funerals of the children who were victims of the shooting. Classy.

Here's a White House petition to recognize them as a hate group
