Default Veronica Mars FOREVER

Okay. Okay. Okay. I watch The Television, and sometimes it is pretty good. Historical dramas are VERY BAD USUALLY. I do not know why Two-and HAlf-man has more than one episode, because each show re-uses the same jokes. Maybe it is a The Performance Art.

But YOU GUYS AND THE LADIES!

Number one is VERONICA MARS IS TOTES GOING TO HAVE A MOVIE!!!!

SO this is the thread to talk about and update about that.

Number two is I am rewatching the series and WILD-MAN ENKIDU'S LEFT NUT IT IS SO GOOD.

The writing. The acting. The pacing. The story arc. The cameos. THIS IS SO GOOD IT MAKES ME CRY A LITTLE.

So anyway, since Barry doesn't want to hear any more about it, and the guys at the gym (the ones who aren't intimidated by my muscle mass and definition) are pretending they are disinterested in discussing the merits of SUCH A RAD SHOW, I bring it to The Free Thought Talk and Chat Emporium.

THERE'S GONNA BE A MOVIE!

I don't know from Veronica Mars, except that my old roommate used to love the shit out of it, but you should definitely make yourself care about Arrested Development. It's a totally different style of show but, much like Harmon-era Community, it was too weird and unique to last, but as much as actually does exist is damn near perfect.

And also...

Okay, I've never seen Veronica Mars and know exactly nothing about it.

No, that's not right: I know exactly one thing about it. It has Kristen Bell in it.

And frankly, I'd probably pay good money to see a movie that consisted of nothing but 2 hours of her standing in place and reading from a telephone book.

THE LONE RANGER I WILL GIVE YOU THE KNOWLEDGE

Okay. So Veronica Mars is a high-school student at Neptune High. Neptune is a fictional coastal town in California with a clear divide between the haves and the have-don'ts. The Movie Stars and The Software Execs on one side of the tracks, and The Working Peons on the other. SO RIGHT AWAY THIS SHOW ACKNOWLEDGES CLASS SYSTEMS. And not in a stupid way, either, but in a smart and nuanced way, throughout the show.

Veronica Mars' backstory is her father, Keith Mars, was the town sheriff. Veronica's best friend- and her boyfriend's sister- Lilly Kane- was found murdered at the Kane estate. The Kane family is extremely influential and powerful in Neptune; and one of the primary employers. Sheriff Mars, as the investigation develops, arrests Lilly Kane's father on suspicion of murder.

The town council issues a no-confidence vote in Sheriff Mars and they fire him; at the same time the new sheriff arrests a man with physical evidence links to the Lilly Kane murder.

Veronica's mother leaves town, and is secretive about why- though the stressful publicity and her husband's dismissal from office seem to be a part of it. She has a history of alcohol abuse and the marriage has been rocky for a while. Keith Mars opens up a private detective business, and Veronica, who had been "in" with the wealthy elite in the high school, since she had been dating the Kane boy, is dumped by her boyfriend, and snubbed by the school. So now she struggles to help her dad with the business and deal with school, her mom's leaving. AND SHE BASICALLY USES HER KNOWLEDGE TO SOLVE MYSTERIES.

AND THIS IS JUST THE BACKSTORY COVERED IN THE FIRST EPISODE!!!!!!!

HERE IS THE THING. ALL THE CHARACTERS HAVE DEPTH IN THIS SHOW. They do good things. They do bad things. But it works in their characters- their evolving, struggling, conflicted characters. The craft of The Narrative never takes the easy road in this show.

SO OF COURSE YOU SHOULD OWN THIS SERIES BOX SET DVD.

But if you wanted to preview the pilot or other episodes to make sure it was worth it (IF YOU HAD SOME DOUBTS ABOUT HOW RIGHT I AM ABOUT THIS WHICH WOULD BE REALLY DUMB OF YOU) you could look around on the ARR MATEY! internets SOMEWHERE to find it. COUGH COUGH.

AND! Her last name is MARS. AS IN ARES. AS IN MYTHOLOGY CONNECTION. SUPER DUPER.

AND! A lot of the actors go on to star in PARTY DOWN.

AND! SEASON THREE STARS STEVE GUTENBERG, INVENTOR OF THE BIBLE.

Okay, I've added disk one of the first season to my "Blockbusters" queue. Seems like it's worth taking a look at.

Even if it didn't star the delightful Kristen Bell, it sounds way better than 99% of what passes for "entertainment" on television.

Yeah, seriously. A class system in an American tv-show! :gasp:

That alone makes it different and cool. I always thought it was underrated.

Ms. Frequency on The You Tube also likes this show a lot, though she doesn't like season three. She points out that Veronica Mars is competent and The Tech savvy, and that the show doesn't normally use The Violence to solve problems.

Well, it's taken as an article of faith in this country that we're a classless society. And like most things that are justified by faith and faith alone, people tend to get upset when you ask uncomfortable questions or point out that the claim is obviously false.

Not, of course, that this stops so-called "Conservatives" from implying that our political and economic woes are ultimately due to lazy, good-for-nothing members of the lower classes trying to oppress the noble, hard-working, beleaguered members of the upper classes.

I promise you will not regret it, TLR. I love it to bits. I kicked in $50 to the movie and wish I could have afforded more.

At the risk of being smited, (smote?) I must correct you, proto-überGorden. Steve Gutenberg is in season two. Season three has Ed Begley, Jr, and Richard Grieco.

OK, let's talk about the show. I know most people think season three is weak for a variety of reasons. Personally, I think it's weakness stems from the loss of focus on the class issues. By moving to college, a small, liberal arts college no less, the economic range of the characters was contracted. Of course, it also made it harder to include some of the characters integral to earlier seasons, like Keith Mars and Weevil.

When I think of season three the standout episode to me is one of the few where they did address class. It's the episode with the meal card mystery, which is about as spoiler-free a description as I can get. The last story arc of the season also went back to covering class and privilege and I think it was the strongest big mystery of the season.

Good point. There also isn't enough Backup in season three.

I'm working my way through my third time. I'm in the middle of season two right now. I lent them to my niece after showing her the pilot to get her hooked. She kept them way too long and I was sad, but they are back home now. I also scored a two pack of Party Down at Target for $14 last month that I need to fit into the rotation. It is an impulse buy I'm sure I won't regret.
