Default Southern-fried Watser?

Headin' out to Texas :oldnag: in a week and a half in time for a party that my brother's girlfriend is throwing for her 50th B-day.
:club:

Well, we are going to be in New Orleans :mardigras: for 5 days or so and then flying on to San Antone. She lives in New Braunfels, which is between San Antonio and Austin. So after the parteh, she and my brother are giving us a tour around Big Bend National Park :cactus: and then we're on our own. So any tips on Austin or San Antonio are appreciated. Or on New Orleans, which seemed like a good idea at the time :gasmask:

Oh, cool. Well, actually, it'll be really, really fucking hot.

About to sign off, so I'll see what I can add tomorrow. ViciousMammaries will have a lot more on Austin than I would, although I can provide plenty of info on San Antone and New Braunfels.

I was afraid it was gonna be really fucking hot. I have been in some desert places though, so I hope I'll be ok. It's a good thing I have an almost unlimited amount of sweat. :sweaty:

The single most interesting thing to do in San Antonio is the tour of the Alamo. But then, I'm not sure what would be interesting about it from a non-texan, non-american view point.

For Texans, it marks a turning point in their fight for independence from Mexico; a rallying point to oppose the oppressionary forces of the evil brown people. It's there if you want to peek in on a bit of Texas history. Other than that, there's the river walk, which I guess is now a commercialized tourist trap - but a very pretty one last time I was there.

Well, the part where you're in New Orleans (or practically anywhere east of San Antonio) is sooo not going to be desert-like heat! More like jungle-like heat. But it's really not that bad.

I'm probably taking my laptop but am not likely to be on much. I will be in the New Braunsfels area from the 25th of June but be busy until the Thursday after that I think. So somewhere between Thursday 1 and Wednesday 7 is open.

You should get some barbecue and Mexican food.

Oh yeah, you could get some entertaining fiction by buying some history textbooks as well.

A little ways west of Austin is the best BBQ in the west, at Cooper's in Llano.

I don't know nothing 'bout Texas, but I love NOLA.

Not sure what you are into, but New Orleans has awesome walking tours. Historical, cemetery, ghost stories, Voodoo. They do Katrina tours, but that's not my cuppa. It may be hit or miss with the tour guides, though I have lucked out every time there

I enjoy just walking the French Quarter and shopping and looking at the architecture, then having cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe Du Monde and watching people

The Garden District is a lovely stroll. You can take guided tours, but I bought a book at the little shop by the cemetery there and used it.

One of my fave things was driving out of town to do a Cajun bayou tour. Not sure what the oil spill is doing to that, so maybe a plantation tour instead.

I am really weird about eating in New Orleans, since it's so well known for it's food. I would rather get a mufaletta from the general store down by the French market than eat at Emeril's or any of the famous fine dining places, and I like gumbo over etoufee, but that's me.

Find a place with a Zydeco band and dance

And yes, this week has been hot and humid, and there is always a good chance you will get rained on at some point in New Orleans.

Sounds good and about what I had in mind. Plus throw in some alligators, somewhere in the surrounding area, need to see some of those.

I'm not sure what would be particularly interesting to you, given that you have already traveled to places that are far more interesting. However, here are a few things:

The only thing in Austin I know about is the bat tour. There is a bridge that is home to something like 1.5 million bats. Various boats will take you out just before dusk to watch them, and every night like clockwork, all of those little bastards come out in a continuous stream for about 20 minutes, until they're all out. You'll need binoculars to see more than an amorphous cloud, but I thought it was pretty cool. I forget the name of the bridge, but velvetdoughnuts can tell you.

San Antonio: The River Walk, iirc, has always been a commercialized tourist trap. But it's a very pretty one. There's a boat tour that will take you through the entire area and tell you about the history. It's worth taking at least once. As vm will recall, I am unimpressed by the faux-Mexican restaurants there. He liked the food at the place I took him to, but the poor bastard just doesn't know any better, bless his heart. They make good margaritas, but that's about it. The taquerias a mile or two outside the River Walk have much better food, and they're cheaper, too.

I dunno how you feel about gawking at animals other than alligators, but there are various animal attractions in New Braunfels and the outskirts of San Antonio. The San Antonio Zoo is decent; not the best, but decent. They have a nice big alligator pit. In New Braunfels there's a Wildlife Safari place that has an old-fashioned drive-through animal preserve. You can see lots of African and North American critters there, including ostriches. There's also the Snake Farm in New Braunfels, which is a small mini-zoo (but well maintained with professional herpetologists on site) that includes one big room full of snakes from around the world.

Finally, there's a big ranch in New Braunfels set up like a frontier town. Not my cuppa, but just in case you want to see a Texas Longhorn up close ... :bunnythrust:

I'm going to be in friggin' Oregon (Depoe Bay) for the first part of your visit, so I dunno if I can meet up, but I'll see if I can swing it. Where you're going is a good 3.5-hour drive from where I live, so I can't make promises.
