I don't think it's unreasonable to be wondering about that. But it also depends on what the rules are for competitors. There could be any number of reasons for her masculine appearance and voice, etc. not all of which should be grounds for disqualification imo. I certainly don't fault anyone for wondering or being suspicious, the more questionable parts are, I think, the rules and what the procedure should be for whether a test should be administered.
Well, it seems that if it's so important, they should have guidelines already in place to establish sex. (Which maybe they do, but it doesn't sound like it.) Is sex determined by hormones? Genetics? Physical characteristics?
And if they do have these guidelines already in place, why not test everyone just to establish their sex, and not just those who 'fail' the casual observer test? It's apparently pretty common for people to be visually one sex and genetically another, and they often don't know it themselves.

I understand gender-verification in the sporting world, but this is racing around the news, and people around the globe are staring at this poor woman and trying to guess "what is it?!" really sickens me. Heh I once had the chance to play against the Singapore National Women's football team. We won 2-0. We were all 15-16 years old (though ok, some of us were even in the school team). Years later, when I was a teacher, a national team fullback was a PE teacher at my school, and I, slightly heavier and much less fit, still had no problem *cough*tackling*cough* her.
But on a serious note it's a good thing for these kinds of things to be in the news. I feel a lot of sympathy for Semenya, since none of it is actually her fault or within her control, and it's just terribly embarassing to have the entire world speculating about your gender. But the real story is the degree to which our biology determines us, and shows how grey the areas can be. Anti-gay-agenda/cures-for-gays idiots take note. Germaine Greer hashes it out in an unusually unstrident and succinct manner.

To test Semenya's gender, Dr. Bowen-Simpkins said the IAAF test would involve her being examined by a gynecologist to see what her genitals look like. Semenya would also have an ultrasound to see if she has all the normal female reproductive organs.
Doctors would also need an hormonal test to see if she had an excess of testosterone and they would also test her chromosomes.
People who are intersex could also have the condition and not be aware of it, as was the case of Indian athlete Santhi Soundarajan, who failed a gender test at the 2006 Asian games and was stripped of her medal. She later attempted suicide, survived and recently announced she was becoming a coach.
