Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Palin, though notoriously ill-travelled outside the United States, did journey far to the first of the four colleges she attended, in Hawaii. She and a friend who went with her lasted only one semester. "Hawaii was a little too perfect," Palin writes. "Perpetual sunshine isn't necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls." Perhaps not. But Palin's father, Chuck Heath, gave a different account to Conroy and Walshe. According to him, the presence of so many Asians and Pacific Islanders made her uncomfortable: "They were a minority type thing and it wasn't glamorous, so she came home." From the current New Yorker.

That makes this even more interesting

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
You know what? I thought about it again and I think I cracked the code! My theory is that she meant that she was in the minority (probably defined in her mind as "somewhere less than 90%"), and it wasn't as glamorous as she thought being a minority would be. That's just my scientific wild ass guess, based on the fact that I couldn't figure out how to parse that quotation any other way. If it's even true.

She should have gone blonde. I got my hair patted so many times when I was in Hawaii. Glamorous, indeed!

That's how I read it too and I feel sorry for her that being a minority wasn't nearly as glamorous as those lying liberals in hollywood would have you believe. I bet she wasn't even stopped once by the Cops for driving a nice car.

Did she go to UH, or Brigham Young? It's true that caucasians are a minority in Hawaii, no matter where you are on the islands. There are no majority ethnicities, IIRC.
And no, it's not glamorous to be a minority, though I'm skeptical of how one could initially perceive it to be glamorous. I'm thinking it's a wrong word used in place of searching for the right one.
I found Hawaii a very comfortable place to live, even if I was part of the white minority; the environment was as laid back about race as it's advertised. I did have something of a culture shock coming back to the mainland, as it turned out to be disconcerting to see so little ethnic diversity.

Maybe to an 18-year-old small town girl, it seemed glamorous. Or maybe she was looking for the word exotic. Or maybe she never said it and she's getting misquoted by somebody 30 or so years later who may be remembering it wrong.

I felt that way moving from California to Georgia, but I eventually caught on that it isn't less diverse, it's just different ethnicities than I'm used to. Also it was partly the difference between urban and rural areas.

I love Hawaii, but I hear it's a whole different ball game hanging out as an adult, than trying to go to school there as a kid on "kill haole" days.

Palin quit her vacation, because a photographer caught her wearing a visor with 'McCain' marked over with a Sharpie, that same McCain without whom nobody'd ever have heard her freakin name. The trailer park Zsa Zsa at a possum feed, indeed.

What is she trying to say? O.O
Is Sarah Palin... goin' Rogue?
---
Funner than listening to Palin talk about her "Down Syndrome baby" (does it have a name yet, or are we settled on calling it this forever?) for her political agenda, is listening to the women on The View talk about Palin talk about her "Down Syndrome baby" for daytime ratings.

Point taken, but all Palin's offbeat babby names are well known; this one's called "Truss," IIRC.
Anyway I thought the hat was advertising frozen potato puffs.

My friend Erica had blonde hair when she lived in Tokyo. Boy how, did she get her hair patted.
Also, at the minority thing.
