So you would expect Italy to have a higher mortality rate if the virus spread to exact same percentage of the population. So that's probably a fair part of the difference - the high risk population is smaller as a percentage of the population in the US. There are 50% more elderly (65+) people per capita in Italy than in the US.
It's also the case that the US hasn't had many hospitals overloaded yet, at which point the mortality rate would go up. There are many cases in the US, but they're perhaps not as concentrated geographically as they are in Italy.
|
This is true, and the US mortality has already slowed significantly compared to Italy, to more like the numbers in the rest of Europe.

Re: Winnie the Flu
Panic buying in the UK has now extended to the next level: all home delivery slots are booked out for the next three weeks for Sainsburys and 2.5 weeks for Tesco. Other stores that offer deliveries also affected.
Looks like the rest of us will have to physically go to the stores. Like refugees.
I shall be clearing my throat pointedly. And sniffing judgementally.

I called an elderly neighbor WITH MY FACE today, and emailed the new infants next door, one of whom is at risk, to let them know we have extra toilet paper and other necessities if they need them.
Not offering or anything. Just flexing.

Re: Winnie the Flu
You’re behind the times suckers! Step up your game everyone, as of 12:01 tonight SF is in lockdown, no movement in or out of the city unless accompanied by a gay or gay identifying neural network... Ok really it’s more of a suspension of non essential gatherings and businesses. For the next 3 weeks. Well this is going to get interesting.

Re: Winnie the Flu
Minnesota has 54 cases now, no reported deaths. Bars, coffee shops, restaurants, libraries will close at noon today. Schools are closing on Wednesday. Most court cases are suspended for 2 weeks.
My tech setup at home is too primitive to allow me to work from home so I'm one of the few still coming into work.

This is a great, quick read on what many of us already know. Trump royally fucked up pretty much every bit of handling this. Sadly, many of the tweets could be aimed at BoJo the clown here as well.

I question those assertions. It's as likely that he's still acting randomly, based on who sucked up to him most recently (or against whoever criticised him most recently).

I went to a shop. Lots of empty shelves. No toilet paper. Not much pasta. None of the brand of cat food my cat likes. Lots of other things in stock, but most aisles had at least one section empty.
Moral: when I next hear a rumour of panic buying, I'll be joining the herd, because it's self-reinforcing.

State of emergency now declared in Luxembourg.
140 cases now and 1 death.
I'm still working in the office and the atmosphere is strange. The anxiety and nervousness is palpable. Weird and not in a good way.

Agreed. If DFT actually managed to do something right, it was probably by mistake.

Re: Winnie the Flu
It’s been funny to see what gets left behind. Like the boxed Mac and Cheese section was all cleared out, except for Velveeta, no one wanted Velveeta, I passed on it as well.
Here the nations grocery stockers have put out a plea for people to stop panic buying as it’s causing them longer hours. There are many things that are apparently ‘in stock’ but at a warehouse and now suddenly instead of needing one regular restocking shipment, every store needs ten and most places just weren’t set up to need to restock this fast.
Here there’s the silver lining that everyone just went out and did their earthquake preparedness shopping that they keep putting off.
